Questions to Ask Tarot, and How to Ask Them Well
Ask tarot open questions about things you can influence. Our own yes/no table shows why: 48 of the 78 cards lean yes upright and none lean yes reversed, so closed questions mostly reflect the deck's makeup. Below are 41 questions with the best spread for each.
On this page (11)
Key finding: In our yes/no table, 48 of 78 cards lean yes upright and 0 lean yes reversed; a single upright card says yes 61.54% of the time and our three-card yes/no rule says yes in 73.84% of all 76,076 upright draws.
Why do yes or no tarot questions give skewed answers?
Because the cards themselves lean unevenly. In our yes/no table, 48 of the 78 cards lean yes when upright, but no card leans yes when reversed. Turn reversals off and a single card says yes 61.54% of the time; turn them on and maybe becomes the most common answer.
Every card page on this site carries a yes, no or maybe lean for upright and for reversed, written from the card's traditional meaning. We counted all 78 cards with Python. Here is what the table holds.
| Lean | Upright (78 cards) | Reversed (78 cards) | All 156 outcomes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yes | 48 (61.54%) | 0 (0%) | 48 (30.77%) |
| Maybe | 15 (19.23%) | 64 (82.05%) | 79 (50.64%) |
| No | 15 (19.23%) | 14 (17.95%) | 29 (18.59%) |
The arithmetic is simple division: 48/78 = 61.54%, and with reversals on each of the 156 card-and-orientation outcomes is equally likely, so yes is 48/156 = 30.77%, maybe 79/156 = 50.64% and no 29/156 = 18.59%.
The skew is not a flaw. Most tarot cards describe ordinary hopes and efforts, so upright they read as open doors. Reversed, a card usually shows the same energy delayed or blocked, which is closer to "not yet" than to "no". Only one card, Death, leans no in both orientations, and only one, Wheel of Fortune, flips from yes upright to no reversed.
Does a three-card yes or no reading change the odds?
Yes. Our three-card yes or no reading adds the leans (yes +1, maybe 0, no -1) and answers yes if the total is positive. Upright only, that rule says yes in 73.84% of all possible draws. With reversals on, yes drops to 46.16%, maybe rises to 30.58% and no to 23.26%.
We checked every possible draw rather than sampling. Upright only, there are C(78,3) = 76,076 three-card hands: 56,176 give yes, 11,255 maybe and 8,645 no. With reversals on, each hand has 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 orientations, for 608,608 outcomes: 280,942 yes, 186,126 maybe and 141,540 no.
So a closed question pulls toward yes, especially with reversals off. That is the real reason to ask open questions: a closed one gets an answer shaped mostly by the deck's makeup, while an open one gets a picture you can think with. If you do want a straight answer, the yes or no tarot reading shows each card's reason, and our yes or no oracle is built for quick, light questions.
How do you ask tarot a question?
Ask about something you can influence, phrase it as an open question that starts with "what" or "how", keep it to one topic, and set a time frame that fits the spread. Then pick the spread whose positions match what you want to know, and read each card in its position.
Four checks turn a vague worry into a question the cards can answer well.
- Open, not closed. "Will I get the job?" has two possible answers and the deck leans yes. "What do I need to know about this application?" gives every card something to say.
- You, not them. "What can I do about the distance between us?" works better than "What is he thinking?". The cards cannot read another mind, but they can prompt you to look at your own part.
- A sensible time frame. "This week" or "this month" suits a one-card or three-card reading. Big, slow questions belong in a Celtic cross.
- One focus. If your question has "and" in it, split it into two readings.
Avoid questions about health, pregnancy, legal outcomes, money results or anyone's death. Tarot cannot answer them, and a random card should never stand in for a doctor, lawyer or adviser.
What are good questions to ask tarot about love?
Good love questions look at the connection and your part in it, not at fixed outcomes. Ask what a relationship needs, what stands in the way or what you are bringing to it. Our five-card love tarot reading has positions for you, the other person, the connection, the obstacle and the direction.
- What do I need to understand about this relationship right now? (love reading)
- What am I bringing to this connection, and what is the other person bringing? (love reading)
- What stands in the way of us feeling closer? (love reading)
- What can I do to communicate better with my partner? (three cards)
- What did my last relationship teach me that I should carry forward? (three cards)
- What am I looking for in a partner that I have not admitted yet? (three cards)
- How can I tell whether this new connection is worth my time? (love reading)
- What would help me feel ready to date again? (three cards)
- What does this friendship need from me? (three cards)
- Where is this connection heading if nothing changes? (love reading)
- Should I reach out to them this week? (yes or no, three cards)
What questions should you ask tarot about work and career?
For work, ask what to focus on, what holds you back and what step comes next. These match the positions of our five-card career tarot reading: where you stand, what helps you, what holds you back, your next step and where it is heading. Avoid questions about salary figures or exact dates.
- What should I focus on at work this month? (career reading)
- What is holding me back from the next step in my career? (career reading)
- What strength am I not using in my current job? (career reading)
- How can I handle this difficult colleague more calmly? (three cards)
- What do I need to know before I apply for this role? (career reading)
- What would make this project go more smoothly? (three cards)
- What am I avoiding in my work life? (three cards)
- What kind of work would feel meaningful to me now? (Celtic cross)
- How can I set better boundaries around work? (three cards)
- Is this a good week to ask for feedback? (yes or no)
What should you ask tarot when facing a decision?
For a decision, ask what each option asks of you, not which one "wins". Our decision tarot reading lays out two paths side by side, with one card for where each leads and one for what each demands. That lets you compare the price of each choice.
- What does each option ask of me? (two paths)
- Path A or path B: where does each one lead? (two paths)
- What am I not seeing about this choice? (three cards)
- What fear is behind my hesitation? (three cards)
- What would I choose if I were not worried about other people's opinion? (two paths)
- What is the next small step I can take? (one card)
- What do I need to let go of before I decide? (three cards)
- What is the bigger picture around this decision? (Celtic cross)
- Am I ready to make this decision today? (yes or no)
- What will help me live well with whichever choice I make? (three cards)
What questions can you ask tarot about yourself?
Questions about yourself are where tarot works best, because the answer is always within reach of your own reflection. Ask what you need today, what pattern keeps repeating or what you are ready to let go of. A single daily tarot card suits short, gentle check-ins.
- What do I need to know today? (one card)
- What energy should I bring into this week? (one card)
- What am I ready to grow out of? (three cards)
- Where am I being too hard on myself? (three cards)
- What is draining my energy right now? (three cards)
- What brings me back to myself when I feel scattered? (three cards)
- What pattern keeps repeating in my life, and why? (Celtic cross)
- What gift am I overlooking in myself? (one card)
- What does my past, present and future look like on this question? (three cards)
- What do I need to forgive, in myself or someone else? (three cards)
That makes 41 questions. Notice how few of them could be answered with a plain yes or no. Each one asks the cards to show you something, which matches what the deck does best.
Which spread fits which question?
Match the number of cards to the size of the question. One card suits a daily prompt, three cards suit most everyday questions, five-card love, career and decision spreads suit focused topics, and the ten-card Celtic cross suits a complex, slow-moving situation. Yes or no spreads suit only light, closed questions.
| Your question is about | Best spread | Cards |
|---|---|---|
| Today or this week | Card of the day | 1 |
| A simple, light yes or no | Yes or no | 1 or 3 |
| Most everyday questions | Past, present, future | 3 |
| A relationship | Love reading | 5 |
| Work or study | Career reading | 5 |
| A choice between two options | Two paths | 5 |
| A big, tangled situation | Celtic cross | 10 |

Questions
What is the best question to ask tarot?
An open question about something you can influence, such as "What do I need to know about this situation?". It gives every card something useful to say.
Can you ask tarot yes or no questions?
Yes, for light questions. Bear in mind that 48 of 78 cards lean yes upright in our table, so with reversals off a single card says yes 61.54% of the time.
What questions should you not ask tarot?
Avoid questions about health, pregnancy, legal outcomes, money results or death, and questions about what someone else is secretly thinking. Tarot cannot answer them.
Can you ask tarot the same question twice?
You can, but redrawing until you like the answer only gives you another random draw. Write down the first reading and come back to it after something has changed.
