What Human Design is
Human Design is a system for self-reflection created by Alan Robert Krakower, who wrote under the name Ra Uru Hu. He said the system came to him in 1987, and he published The Human Design System in 1992. It combines pieces of older traditions: the zodiac and planets of Western astrology, the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the centers of the Hindu chakra system and the Tree of Life of the Kabbalah, with ideas its founder took from modern physics.
A chart is drawn from two moments. The Personality side is the sky at your birth; the Design side is the sky about three months earlier. The positions of the Sun, Earth, Moon, the lunar nodes and the planets at both moments land on gates, and the gates switch on channels and centers in the body graph. There is no scientific evidence that a chart describes a person, and we present it as people use it: a vocabulary for noticing how you decide, work and rest.

How to read your chart
- Type comes from which centers are defined and how they connect. A defined Sacral makes a Generator, or a Manifesting Generator when a motor center also reaches the Throat. With an open Sacral, a motor connected to the Throat makes a Manifestor and anything else a Projector. A chart with no defined center is a Reflector.
- Strategy is the way of entering things that goes with each type: respond, inform, wait for the invitation, or wait a lunar cycle.
- Inner authority is the part of the chart the system trusts for decisions, checked in a fixed order: Solar Plexus (emotional), Sacral, Spleen, Heart, then the G center reaching the Throat. Projectors with none of these use their surroundings and other people as a sounding board; Reflectors take a full Moon cycle.
- Profile is the line of your Personality Sun, then the line of your Design Sun, such as 2/4.
- Definition counts the separate groups your defined centers form: single, split, triple split or quadruple split.
- Centers are colored when defined and dark when open. A channel is defined when both of its gates are activated, by either side.
In the body graph, a gold gate is activated by the Personality (birth) side, a copper gate by the Design side, and a striped gate by both. The tables under it give the same data as text, with the zodiac degree of every activation.
88 degrees, not 88 days
The Design moment is not a fixed number of days before birth. It is the instant when the Sun stood exactly 88 degrees of ecliptic longitude behind its position at your birth. The Sun moves a little faster in early January than in early July (about 1.02 against 0.95 degrees a day), so the Design moment falls between roughly 86 and 92 days before birth, depending on the season.
The calculator finds that instant by iteration: it starts about 89 days back, measures the Sun's apparent longitude, corrects the time by the remaining angle divided by the Sun's speed, and repeats until the gap is below a ten-millionth of a degree. Then it computes all 13 positions again for that moment. Your result shows the Design moment in Universal Time.
Every gate is an I Ching hexagram
The 64 gates are the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, with the same numbers: gate 1 is hexagram 1, Creative Force, and gate 64 is hexagram 64, Before Completion. Human Design spreads them around the zodiac in a fixed order, starting with gate 41 at 2 degrees Aquarius, each gate 5 degrees 37.5 minutes wide and split into six lines of 56.25 minutes, the same six lines a hexagram has. In your result, every gate and every gate.line links to our page for that hexagram, with its traditional judgment, the line texts and a plain reading, so you can go from your chart straight to the source the gate is named after. You can also cast a hexagram or browse all 64 hexagrams.

How common each type is
We ran the calculator on 20,000 random birth moments between 1970 and 2024. Generators came out at 36%, Manifesting Generators 32%, Projectors 21%, Manifestors 10% and Reflectors 0.9%. Emotional authority, a defined Solar Plexus, was the most common authority at 52%. The full tables are on our method page.
Why the exact birth time matters
The calculator needs your birth time and place, and it has no "unknown time" option on purpose. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it changes gate roughly every ten hours and line about every hour and three quarters; a chart cast for noon would show a type and profile that may simply not be yours. Even the Sun can tip a chart over a boundary: on 22 April 1990, a birth at 09:37 UT gives a Self-Projected 6/3 Projector and a birth at 09:38 UT a Splenic 1/3 Projector, because the Sun moves from gate 3 into gate 27 in between. Your result says how many minutes your birth time could move before an activation or the summary would change, so you know how much a rounded birth time matters for your chart.
If you do not know your time, the birth chart calculator can still show what is certain from the date alone.
Method and accuracy
Planet positions come from the same engine as all our astrology calculators, checked against NASA JPL Horizons (details on the method page). The Earth is the point opposite the Sun and the South Node the point opposite the North Node. We use the true lunar node, as the Human Design software of the system's own publisher does; you can switch to the mean node, which some free calculators use.
We compared 15 charts for invented birth data with two public calculators: 12 from Jovian Archive and 3 from Augurine (with our mean-node option, which Augurine uses). All 390 activations matched gate and line, and so did every type, authority, profile, definition and cross, including a Reflector and a birth one minute away from a gate change. The node choice matters more than it looks: in our sample, switching to the mean node moved a node gate or line in 89% of charts and changed the type, authority or definition in 9.7%.
Questions
Is this Human Design chart free?
Yes. The chart, the body graph and every text are free, with no account and no email. Your birth details are calculated in your browser and are not sent to us; they stay on your device only if you tick Remember.
How do I find my Human Design type?
Enter your birth date, exact time and place above. Your type is the first line of the result, worked out from which centers are defined and whether a motor center connects to the Throat.
What is the most common Human Design type?
Generator. In our run of 20,000 random birth moments, 36% were Generators, 32% Manifesting Generators, 21% Projectors, 10% Manifestors and 0.9% Reflectors.
Can I get a Human Design chart without my birth time?
Not a reliable one. The Moon changes line about every hour and three quarters, and even one minute can change the profile or the type when the Sun is near a boundary. Ask for your birth certificate or a hospital record if you can.
Why does my chart differ from another calculator?
The usual reason is the lunar node: we use the true node, as most Human Design software does, while some free calculators use the mean node. Use the node switch in your result to compare. A different birth time zone or a rounded birth time is the other common cause.
What do the numbers like 36.2 mean?
The first number is the gate, which is also the number of an I Ching hexagram, and the second is the line of that gate, from 1 to 6. Each one in your result links to the hexagram page.
Is Human Design scientific?
No. It is a modern system built from astrology, the I Ching, the chakras and the Kabbalah, and no study has shown that a chart predicts personality. Many people still find its language useful for reflecting on how they make decisions.
