Numerology: What Your Numbers Mean
Numerology turns your birth date and name into a few key numbers, each with a traditional meaning. Use our free calculators to find yours, then read what 1 to 9 and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 suggest.
The numbers
What is numerology?
Numerology is an old tradition that gives each number a character and reads those characters in your own date of birth and name. A number like 4 is linked with structure and steady work, 5 with change and freedom, 7 with study and reflection. Your chart is simply the set of numbers your details add up to.
It is a tool for reflection, not a science. No study has shown that numbers predict personality or events, and we do not claim they do. Many people still find the meanings a useful mirror: a prompt to think about strengths, habits and the season they are in. That is how we suggest you use it.
The number meanings on this site are our own summary of how modern Western numerology commonly reads each number. They do not come from a single book, and they are not tested findings.
Pythagorean or Chaldean: which letter chart?
To turn a name into a number, each letter gets a value. The Pythagorean chart, the one most Western calculators use, runs through the alphabet in order: A=1 up to I=9, then J starts again at 1, and so on to Z=8. The Chaldean chart, named after the Chaldeans of ancient Mesopotamia (the chart itself is a modern tradition), uses only the values 1 to 8 and assigns them by sound rather than by order, so F=8, O=7 and U=6. The same name can give different results in each. Our name numerology calculator lets you switch between the two.
What are the core numbers?
A full reading uses six numbers. Each is reduced by adding its digits until one digit is left.
- Life path, from your full date of birth: the main theme of your life.
- Expression (destiny), from every letter of your full birth name: your natural talents.
- Soul urge (heart's desire), from the vowels A, E, I, O and U: what you want deep down. Y counts as a consonant.
- Personality, from the consonants: how others tend to see you.
- Birthday number, from the day you were born.
- Personal year, from your birth month and day plus the current year: the tone of the year you are in.
Here is a quick example. For a birth date of July 15, 1985, reduce each part on its own: July is 7, the day 15 becomes 1 + 5 = 6, and the year 1985 becomes 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5. Add them: 7 + 6 + 5 = 18, and 1 + 8 = 9. The life path is 9. Our numerology calculator works out all six numbers at once, and the life path number calculator shows every step.
What are master numbers?
Three numbers are not reduced when they appear: 11, 22 and 33. Numerologists call them master numbers and read them as stronger, more demanding forms of 2, 4 and 6. Master number 11 is linked with intuition, 22 with building on a large scale and 33 with teaching and care. If a core number reaches one of them, it is kept as it is (personal year numbers are the one exception: they are always reduced to a single digit).
What is karmic debt?
Four numbers, 13, 14, 16 and 19, are called karmic debt numbers. When one of them appears as a total, or while reducing it, before the final reduction, numerologists read it as a lesson carried into this life: 13 about effort, 14 about self-control, 16 about humility and 19 about independence balanced with asking for help. It is a theme to reflect on, not a punishment. The karmic debt calculator checks all your core numbers for it.
How do numbers connect to tarot?
The Major Arcana are numbered 0 to 21, so many readers pair each number with a card: 1 with the Magician, 9 with the Hermit and so on. Our guide to numbers in tarot explains the links, and the tarot birth card calculator turns your birth date into a pair of cards.
Questions
Is numerology accurate?
There is no scientific evidence that numbers shape personality or events. Numerology is best used as a reflective tradition: the meanings can prompt useful questions about yourself, but they are not facts or forecasts.
What is the most important number in numerology?
Most numerologists treat the life path number as the most important, because it comes from your date of birth and is read as the main theme of your life. The expression number from your name comes next.
What is the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology?
Pythagorean numerology numbers the letters in alphabet order from 1 to 9. Chaldean numerology uses the values 1 to 8 and assigns them by sound, so the same name can give a different result.
