Three card tarot reading
A three card tarot reading is one of the most widely used spreads: one card for the past, one for the present and one for where things are heading.

The three positions
- Past: what led to this situation, or what you are carrying from before.
- Present: the heart of the matter right now.
- Future: the direction things are moving in if nothing changes. It is a tendency, not a fixed fate.
Read the three cards as a sentence: the past card explains the present, and the present card shows what feeds the future. If the future card worries you, look at the present card for what you can change.
Other ways to read three cards
The same three cards also work as situation, action, outcome; mind, body, spirit; or you, the other person, the relationship. Decide on the meaning of the positions before you draw, and stick with it.
How the draw works
The full 78-card deck is shuffled in your browser with a cryptographic random generator, then spread face down for you to choose from. How the readings work explains the shuffle, reversals and where the meanings come from.
A worked example
Say you ask "What do I need to understand about my new job?" and draw these three cards. This is how the reading reads each one for its position:
Past: Five of Wands. A stretch of friction and competing voices led here. Disagreements or rivalry may have shaped this situation more than anyone planned.
Present: The Hermit reversed. Time alone may have turned into loneliness, or constant noise is drowning out your inner voice. Something is out of balance with how you are spending your days.
Future: Six of Wands. A victory parade may be forming. Your efforts tend to be noticed, and good news may arrive about something you worked hard on.
Read together: a noisy, competitive start, a present where you have been hiding away more than is healthy, and a future of recognition if you step forward. The advice is in the middle card: come out of the cave.
How often the Major Arcana show up in three cards
| Major Arcana in three cards | Chance |
|---|---|
| 0 | 36.4% |
| 1 | 44.5% |
| 2 | 17.0% |
| 3 | 2.0% |
Computed exactly as C(22,k) x C(56,3-k) / C(78,3). Two or three Majors in a three-card reading happens about 1 time in 5, which is why the story of your reading points it out: it usually marks a bigger chapter of life.
Questions
Can the future card change?
Yes. Tarot shows the direction things are moving in now, not a fixed fate. Different choices lead to different results, which is why the present card matters most: it shows what feeds the future. If the future card worries you, look at the present card for what you can change.
What if all three cards are Major Arcana?
That usually points to an important chapter of life rather than a passing situation. The overview under your reading points this out.
