Sun, Moon and Rising Calculator
Your big three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign: the three placements most astrologers read first. Enter your birth date, time and place to find all three, with the degree of each and a short reading.
Big three astrology: why these three
A birth chart has a dozen or more bodies and points, but three of them are traditionally read first. The Sun is the center of the chart and is linked with identity and purpose. The Moon is linked with needs, moods and what makes you feel at home. The rising sign, or Ascendant, is linked with your manner and the first impression you give. Together they are often summed up as "who you are, what you need, how you come across".
The phrase "big three" is a popular modern shorthand; traditional texts speak of the two luminaries (the Sun and Moon) and the Ascendant. Either way, it is a useful place to start, and a reminder that a Sun sign alone describes only a small part of a chart.
What each one needs from you
| Placement | What you need to enter | How fast it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Birth date (time only near a sign change) | About once a month |
| Moon sign | Birth date and approximate time | About every 2.5 days |
| Rising sign | Exact birth time and place | About every 2 hours |
So a birth date alone gives you one of the three for certain, often two, but never the third. If you do not know your birth time, the calculator still shows your Sun sign and, if the Moon stayed in one sign all day, your Moon sign, and leaves the rising sign blank instead of guessing.
Reading the three together, with an example
Take a chart with the Sun in Capricorn, the Moon in Cancer and Libra rising. Capricorn and Cancer are opposite signs, earth and water, so an astrologer might describe someone whose public drive for structure and achievement sits beside a private need for family and closeness. Libra rising, an air sign ruled by Venus, adds a diplomatic, sociable manner. A reader would then ask how these play together: does the person lead with tact, work hard in private, and need home as a place to recharge?
That is the usual method: name the element and mode of each sign, see where they agree or pull apart, and treat the tension as something to understand rather than a flaw. The same Sun sign with a different Moon and rising can read very differently, which is one reason Sun-sign horoscopes feel generic.
Common big three mistakes
- Assuming the Sun sign from a list of dates. Sign dates shift by a day from year to year. If you were born on the 19th to 23rd of a month, enter your full details: the calculator uses the Sun's actual position.
- Guessing the birth time. A wrong time can change the rising sign and, on some days, the Moon sign. Check a birth certificate or hospital record if you can.
- Comparing with a Vedic chart. Sidereal astrology uses a zodiac about 24 degrees earlier, so all three of your signs may differ there. That is a different system, not an error.

Questions
What are my big three in astrology?
Your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. Enter your birth date, time and place in the calculator above to see all three.
How do I find my sun, moon and rising sign?
The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from your date and approximate time, and the rising sign from your exact time and place. The calculator does all three at once and tells you if any of them is uncertain.
Which of the big three is most important?
None of them is more important in a measurable sense. Astrologers often say the Sun describes your core, the Moon your inner life and the rising sign your outward style, and they read the three as a set.
Can I know my big three without my birth time?
You can know your Sun sign and usually your Moon sign. The rising sign needs a birth time, because it changes about every two hours.
What does it mean if my sun and rising sign are the same?
It usually means you were born around sunrise, when the Sun was on the eastern horizon. Astrologers often read this as a chart where your manner and your core identity point the same way.
