Moon Sign Calculator
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth date, and your time and place if you know them, to find it with its exact degree and a reading of what astrologers associate with it.
Why the Moon sign needs more than a date
The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, so a birth date is enough to find your Sun sign. The Moon is much faster. It circles the zodiac in about 27.3 days and moves around 13 degrees a day, so it spends only about two and a half days in each sign. On a little under half of all days, the Moon moves from one sign into the next at some point during the day.
That is why the calculator asks for your time and place. Born on one of those days, two people a few hours apart can have different Moon signs. If you do not know your birth time, the calculator works out the Moon at the start and end of your birth day and tells you whether both fall in the same sign.
How the moon sign is found, with an example
Say you were born on 3 March 1990 at 10:15 at night in Denver. Denver was on Mountain Standard Time, seven hours behind Universal Time, so the moment is 05:15 UT on 4 March. The engine computes the Moon's ecliptic longitude for that instant with the lunar theory described on the method page, adds the small corrections for Earth's wobble (nutation), and reports the sign and degree in the tropical zodiac.
The Moon is the body where the time matters most, so it is also the one we checked most carefully against NASA JPL's ephemeris. Its usual error is far below the 13 degrees the Moon covers in a day, so the only real risk is a birth time that is off, not the arithmetic.
What the Moon sign means in astrology
Astrologers read the Moon as the inner, private side of a chart: what you need in order to feel safe, how you react before you think, the moods you carry and the kind of care you give and look for. Where the Sun sign is often described as how you aim to shine, the Moon sign is described as how you settle and recover. Many people say their Moon sign describes them at home better than their Sun sign does.
The element of the Moon's sign is a common shorthand. A fire Moon (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is linked with needing action and enthusiasm; an earth Moon (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) with routine and tangible comfort; an air Moon (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) with talk and ideas; a water Moon (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) with closeness and feeling. These are traditional associations, offered as starting points for reflection.
Common moon sign mistakes
- Using a horoscope column. Monthly horoscopes are written for Sun signs. Your Moon sign is a different, personal placement.
- Ignoring the time zone. A birth at 11 p.m. in New York is already the next day in Universal Time. Let the place set the time zone, and do not convert anything yourself.
- Mixing zodiacs. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees earlier in 2026, so your Moon sign there (your rashi) is often the previous sign. Use the kundli calculator for that version and the nakshatra calculator for the Moon's lunar mansion.

Questions
What is my moon sign?
It is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Enter your birth date, time and place in the calculator above. Without a time, the calculator tells you whether the Moon stayed in one sign all day or changed signs.
Can I find my moon sign without a birth time?
Often, yes. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so on more than half of all days it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight. If it changed sign on your birth day, you will see both possible signs and the time it switched.
How long does the Moon stay in one sign?
About two and a half days on average. The Moon's speed varies between roughly 12 and 15 degrees a day, so a sign can take a little over two days or nearly three.
Is the moon sign more important than the sun sign?
Neither is more important in any measurable way. In astrology they describe different things: the Sun is usually read as identity and purpose, the Moon as needs and emotional habits. Most astrologers read them together, with the rising sign.
Why do two sites give me different moon signs?
Usually a time zone or daylight saving difference, or one site using noon when you gave no time. If your Moon is close to the edge of a sign, small differences matter. A sidereal (Vedic) site will often give the previous sign.
