How pick a card readings work
Pick a card readings became popular on YouTube and TikTok: a reader lays out three piles and you choose one before the reveal. Here the piles are dealt fresh from a shuffled 78-card deck every time, so your pile is truly yours rather than a recording made for thousands of viewers.
Reading your pile
Your pile holds three cards. Read them as one message: the first card sets the theme, the second adds detail and the third shows where it leads. The overview under the reading ties them together.
Why three piles?
The pick a card format grew out of video readings, where a reader cannot speak to each viewer and asks you to choose instead. Three piles is the usual number: few enough to choose by instinct, enough to feel like a real choice. Here each pile is dealt from a freshly shuffled deck at the moment you choose, so nothing is prepared in advance and no two visitors see the same pile.
How to read your three cards
- What is around you: the energy you are in right now.
- What to do: the action or attitude the cards suggest.
- Where it leads: the direction if you follow that advice.
The story under the reading looks at the three together: how many Major Arcana came up (in three cards, two or more happens about one time in five), which suit leads, and whether the cards grow lighter or heavier from first to last.
Choosing again
It is tempting to keep picking piles until one feels right. Try the first one honestly, write it in your journal, and come back tomorrow. For a direct answer, the yes or no tarot suits better.
Questions
Does it matter which pile I choose?
Choose by instinct, not logic. Each pile is dealt at random from a freshly shuffled deck at the moment you choose, so no pile is better than another; the choice is part of the ritual and helps you focus. Read the pile you chose honestly before you think about trying another one.
