Transit Chart Calculator

A transit chart compares where the planets are now with where they were when you were born. Leave the birth fields empty to see today's sky, or enter your birth details to see which current transits touch your chart, how close they are and when they are exact.

Current transits and personal transits

"Transits" simply means the planets' positions at a given moment. The current transits are today's: which sign each planet is in, which are retrograde, and the aspects they make with each other. Those are the same for everyone, and the calculator shows them as soon as the page opens.

Personal transits are what astrologers usually mean by a transit chart: the current positions laid around the outside of your natal chart, with every aspect a moving planet makes to one of your natal planets or angles. Transiting Jupiter trine your natal Venus, or transiting Saturn crossing your Ascendant, are typical examples. You can also choose any past or future date.

Fast and slow transits

Planets move at very different speeds, so their transits last very different lengths of time.

Transiting bodyTypical speedA 1-degree contact lasts about
Moonabout 13 degrees a daya few hours
Sunabout 1 degree a daytwo days
Marsunder 1 degree a daya few days
Jupiterup to about a quarter degree a daya week or more
Saturnup to about an eighth of a degree a daytwo weeks or more
Uranus, Neptune, Plutoa few minutes of arc a daya month or more, often much longer near a station

That is why astrologers treat the slow planets as the long background chapters and the Moon and Sun as passing days. The figures above are for steady motion; near a retrograde station any planet slows almost to a halt and can sit on one degree for weeks.

Why some transits are exact three times

Example: transiting Saturn reaches a square to your natal Sun in spring, turns retrograde a few weeks later and backs over the same degree in summer, then turns direct and crosses it a third time in winter. The calculator lists all three exact dates and the period when the transit is within orb, so you can see that one "Saturn square Sun" may stretch over most of a year. The same pattern happens with Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, and with Mars in its retrograde years.

How astrologers read transits

  • Which planet is moving sets the theme: Saturn as structure and responsibility, Jupiter as growth, Uranus as change, Neptune as imagination and uncertainty, Pluto as deep transformation.
  • Which natal point it touches sets where the theme lands: the Sun (identity), Moon (feelings), Venus (relationships and values), the Midheaven (public direction).
  • The aspect sets the tone: conjunctions as beginnings, squares and oppositions as friction or turning points, trines and sextiles as ease.

We read transits as themes to notice, not as events. No transit predicts an illness, a windfall, a breakup or a legal outcome, and none of our texts claim it does.

Transits and related tools

The Sun's yearly return to its birth degree has its own page, the solar return chart; the Moon's monthly one is the lunar return. The best-known slow transits have their own calculators: the Saturn return and Jupiter return. Retrograde dates for every planet are on the retrograde calendar, and the Moon's daily phase on the moon phase page.

Questions

What are the current planetary transits?

Open the calculator without entering a birth date to see where every planet is today, which are retrograde, and the aspects among them. It updates to the moment you load the page.

What is a transit chart in astrology?

A chart that places the planets' current (or chosen-date) positions around your birth chart and lists the aspects between them. Astrologers use it to read the themes of a period in your life.

How long does a transit last?

It depends on the planet. A Moon transit lasts hours, a Sun transit a couple of days, and a Saturn or Pluto transit can stay within orb for months, with up to three exact dates.

Do I need my birth time for transits?

For transits to your planets, the date is mostly enough. For transits to your Ascendant, Midheaven and houses, you need an accurate birth time.

Can transits predict the future?

No. Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not a predictive science. We present transits as themes to reflect on, never as forecasts of events.
