What you can use a random tarot card for
- A quick message or journaling prompt.
- Learning the deck: draw a card, guess its meaning, then check it.
- Writing and games: a random card makes a good story prompt or a character's fate.
The draw uses a fair cryptographic random generator. For a more deliberate reading where you choose your own card, use the one card tarot reading.
Random card, by the numbers
| Chance of any one card | 1 in 78 (1.28%) |
|---|---|
| Chance of a specific card in a specific orientation | 1 in 156 (0.64%) |
| Chance the card is a Major Arcana | 22 in 78 (28.2%) |
| Chance of a court card (Page, Knight, Queen or King) | 16 in 78 (20.5%) |
| Draws needed, on average, to see a court card | 78 / 16 = 4.9 |
Ways to use the generator
- Learning the deck: draw, name the card and say its meaning out loud before you read it. Ten minutes a day covers the deck in about two weeks.
- Writing prompts: give a character the card as their fate for the chapter, or draw three for beginning, middle and end.
- Games and role play: a random card makes a quick oracle for a tabletop scene.
- A quick check-in: when you do not want a ritual, one tap is enough.
Want to pick the card yourself instead of a pure random draw? The one card reading spreads the deck for you. Want to keep a card for the whole day? Use the card of the day.
Questions
Is the generator truly random?
Yes. It uses your browser's cryptographic random generator, and every card and orientation is equally likely: any one card comes up 1 time in 78, and a specific card in a specific orientation 1 time in 156. Earlier draws do not change the next one, so the same card can come up twice in a row.
