What Chiron is, in the sky and in astrology

Chiron is a small icy body, a few hundred kilometers across at most, discovered in 1977. It orbits the Sun between Saturn and Uranus on a stretched-out path that takes about 50 years. Astronomers class it with the centaurs, objects that cross the orbits of the giant planets.

Astrologers named its meaning after the centaur Chiron of Greek myth, a healer and teacher who carried a wound he could not heal himself. In a birth chart, Chiron's sign and house are read as a sensitive spot, a place where you may feel tender or unsure, and also where you may become wise and helpful to others with the same struggle. It is a symbolic theme for reflection, not a diagnosis of anything, and nothing here is health advice.

Why Chiron's time in a sign varies so much

Chiron's orbit is very elongated. Near the Sun, where it moves fastest, it crosses signs such as Virgo and Libra in under two years; far from the Sun it lingers in Pisces and Aries for about seven or eight years. So a Chiron sign is shared by everyone born in a window that can be anywhere from about a year and a half to nearly a decade long. As with Jupiter and Saturn, what makes it personal is the house and the aspects to your own planets.

How your Chiron sign is calculated

Chiron has no simple formula like the major planets, so astrologers rely on numerical ephemerides. Our calculator uses a daily table of Chiron's position generated from NASA JPL's Horizons system for 1900 to 2100, and interpolates between days for your birth time. For births outside those years the calculator cannot show Chiron.

Example: for a birth in the late 1980s, Chiron was moving slowly through Cancer; for a birth in the late 1990s it had sped through Libra and Scorpio. The calculator reports the exact degree, whether Chiron was retrograde (it is for about five months a year), and its house if you give a birth time and place.

The Chiron return

Because Chiron's orbit takes about 50 years, it comes back to its birth degree around age 50. Astrologers call this the Chiron return and often describe it as a time to make peace with old hurts and to pass on what you have learned. The calculator lists the exact pass dates. Like the Saturn return and Jupiter return, it is a date with a cultural meaning, not a prediction.

Chiron and related tools

Chiron is shown with all your other placements in the birth chart calculator. Two other points that astrologers read as personal growth themes are the North Node and Black Moon Lilith. If you like to work with a card, the shadow work tarot spread asks questions that fit Chiron's theme.

Questions

What is my Chiron sign?

The zodiac sign Chiron was in when you were born. Enter your birth date in the calculator above; add your birth time and place to see its house too.

What does Chiron mean in astrology?

Chiron is read as the wounded healer: a sensitive area of life, and the wisdom you can build there and share with others. It is a symbolic theme, not a statement about health.

How long does Chiron stay in a sign?

From under two years to about eight years, because its orbit is very elongated. It moves fastest through Virgo and Libra and slowest through Pisces and Aries.

When is my Chiron return?

Around age 50, when Chiron returns to its natal degree. The calculator shows the exact dates.

Why can't I see Chiron for a birth before 1900?

Our Chiron positions come from a table computed from NASA JPL data for 1900 to 2100. Outside that range we prefer to show nothing rather than a guess.
