What Black Moon Lilith is
The Moon's orbit is an ellipse, not a circle. The point where the Moon is farthest from Earth is the apogee, and astrologers call the apogee point Black Moon Lilith. Like the lunar nodes, it is a point in space, not a body you can see. The apogee slowly turns forward around the zodiac, completing a circle in about 8.85 years and spending about nine months in each sign.
The name comes from Lilith, a figure from Jewish folklore. In modern astrology Black Moon Lilith is read as the untamed side of a person: what you refuse to compromise on, desires and anger you were taught to hide, and the places where you insist on your own terms. Like every placement, this is a symbolic reading.
Three different Liliths
Astrology software uses the name for different things, which is the main reason calculators disagree.
- Mean Black Moon Lilith: the averaged apogee, moving smoothly. This is what our calculator shows, and the most common choice.
- True or osculating Lilith: the apogee of the Moon's actual orbit at that instant. Because the Sun's pull keeps reshaping the orbit, it swings back and forth around the mean point and can differ from it by many degrees, sometimes a whole sign.
- Asteroid Lilith (1181): a real asteroid in the main belt, unrelated to the Moon. It has its own position and is not what most people mean by their Lilith sign.
If another site gives you a different Lilith sign, check which of the three it uses.
How your Lilith sign is calculated
The mean apogee follows a smooth formula from lunar theory: its longitude grows by about 40.7 degrees a year from a known starting value. The calculator evaluates that formula for your birth moment in the tropical zodiac, so the result is reproducible with any astronomy reference. Because the point moves only about 7 minutes of arc a day, the birth date alone fixes its sign; you need the time and place only for its house.
Example: if your mean Lilith is at 12 degrees Scorpio, it will reach the same degree again about 8 years and 10 months later, which some astrologers call a Lilith return.
Reading Lilith without fear
Some older writing presents Lilith as dark or dangerous. We do not. Each sign's text names a theme of independence or honesty and the challenge that comes with it. Lilith in Taurus, for instance, is often read as a stubborn loyalty to your own pleasures and values, with the lesson of not feeling ashamed of them. Nothing in a Lilith reading predicts behavior, relationships or harm.
