North Node Calculator
Your North Node is the point where the Moon's path crossed northward over the Sun's path at your birth; your South Node is exactly opposite. Enter your birth date to find both signs and degrees, and your birth time and place to see their houses.
What the lunar nodes are
The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5 degrees to the plane of Earth's orbit (the ecliptic), so twice a month the Moon crosses the ecliptic. The crossing where it heads north is the North Node; the one where it heads south is the South Node. They are points, not bodies, and they are always exactly opposite each other, so if your North Node is in Gemini your South Node is in Sagittarius at the same degree.
The nodes matter in astronomy because eclipses can only happen when a new or full Moon falls close to them. They drift slowly backwards through the zodiac, completing a circle in about 18.6 years and spending about a year and a half in each sign.
Mean node or true node?
The nodes wobble as the Sun's pull disturbs the Moon's orbit. The mean node smooths out that wobble and moves steadily backwards. The true node (also called the osculating node) follows the wobble, so it sometimes stands still or briefly moves forward, and it can differ from the mean node by up to about a degree and a half. Both are legitimate; astrologers simply prefer one or the other. The calculator shows both. Most of the time they fall in the same sign, but if yours sits near a sign boundary they may not, and that is worth knowing before you read anything into it.
What astrologers read in the nodes
In modern Western astrology the North Node is read as a direction of growth, the qualities you are learning to develop, and the South Node as the familiar habits and talents you fall back on. The idea is balance: the South Node's gifts are real, but leaning on them alone can keep you stuck. A North Node in Libra, for example, is often read as learning cooperation and partnership, with a South Node in Aries describing a comfortable habit of going it alone.
In Vedic astrology the same two points are Rahu (north) and Ketu (south) and are counted among the nine grahas used in the kundli and in Vimshottari dasha. Interpretations differ between the two traditions, and both are symbolic systems.
Nodal returns and common mistakes
Because the cycle lasts 18.6 years, the transiting nodes return to their natal positions around ages 18 or 19, 37, 56 and 74. Astrologers call these nodal returns.
- Confusing node and Moon sign. The North Node is not where the Moon was, but where its orbit crosses the ecliptic. Your Moon sign is a separate placement.
- Expecting a sign that matches a friend born the same year. The nodes change sign about every 18 months, so people born a year apart may or may not share it.
- Reading the house without a birth time. The nodes' signs are reliable from a date alone; their houses are not.
Lunar nodes and related tools
See both nodes with your other placements in the birth chart calculator. Other points read as growth themes are Chiron and Black Moon Lilith. Because eclipses only happen near the nodes, the moon phase page is the place to see how the nodes and the lunar cycle meet.
Questions
What is my North Node?
It is the zodiac sign and degree of the Moon's north node at your birth. Enter your birth date above to find it; your South Node is the opposite sign at the same degree.
What does the North Node mean in astrology?
In Western astrology it is read as a direction of growth, while the South Node shows familiar strengths and habits. It is a symbolic way to think about balance, not a destiny.
Should I use the true node or the mean node?
Either. They are usually within about a degree and a half of each other. The calculator shows both, and if they fall in different signs, you can read both or follow the convention you prefer.
Do I need my birth time for the North Node?
Not for its sign: the nodes move only about 3 minutes of arc a day. You need the time and place for its house.
Is the North Node the same as Rahu?
They are the same astronomical point, but Vedic astrology measures it in the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees earlier, so Rahu is often in the previous sign.
