The positions of this spread
- Who you were: The character of the life you imagine, as the card paints them.
- What you carried: The gift, burden or belief that person carried with them.
- The lesson left unfinished: The lesson that story left open, which you may recognize in your own life.
- How it shows up today: How that unfinished theme shows up in your habits, fears or talents today.
- What to release: What you can set down now so the old story weighs less.
A note before you start
Nobody has proven that past lives exist, and this spread does not claim to reveal facts about who you were. Some readers believe in reincarnation, while others treat the past life as a story or a metaphor. Either way the value is the same: imagining another life lets you look at today's patterns from a fresh angle, with a little distance and curiosity.
When to use the past life spread
Try it when you feel a strong pull toward a place, a period of history or a craft you never learned, when a pattern keeps repeating and logic does not explain it, or on a quiet evening when you want a reflective reading rather than a practical one. Writers also use it to build characters.
Set the mood the way you would for a story: soft light, a few slow breaths and no rush. Ask an open question, such as "Show me a life that can teach me something now", and let the first image that comes to mind guide you, even if it seems odd. Skeptics can enjoy this spread too, as long as they treat it as a writing prompt.
How to read it
- Let card 1 become a person. Look at the image, then give them a name, a time and a trade. Court cards are easy to picture. Major Arcana cards suggest a role: the Hierophant a teacher or priest, the Emperor a leader, the Hermit a scholar or wanderer.
- Read cards 3 and 4 together. The link between the imagined lesson and your life today is the useful part of the reading. Ask where you have felt that theme in the past year.
- Make card 5 practical. Translate it into one habit, belief or fear you could put down this month.
- Write the story. Half a page in your journal is enough. You will often notice details you did not plan to write.
- Close gently. If the story turned heavy, end by naming one thing in your present life you are grateful for. For deeper inner work, the shadow work tarot spread asks similar questions in the present tense.

Questions
Can tarot reveal my past life?
There is no proof that past lives exist or that tarot can reveal them. This spread works as an imaginative exercise: the story you build from the cards helps you reflect on your present.
Do I need to believe in reincarnation to use this spread?
No. You can read the past life as a metaphor or a piece of fiction. The questions about your present habits and patterns work either way.
How many cards are in a past life tarot spread?
This one uses five: who you were, what you carried, the unfinished lesson, how it shows up today and what to release.
