  2. Past influences: Past influences: the events or choices that led here and still carry weight.
  3. The future: The future: the direction things are moving in if nothing changes.
  4. The reason behind the question: The reason behind the question: the need or worry that made you ask today.
  5. The potential: The potential: the best outcome open to you if you work with the reading.

When to use a five card spread

Five cards sit in the sweet spot between a quick three card tarot reading and the ten card Celtic cross. Use it when three cards feel too thin for your question but you do not want a long layout: a work situation, a change at home, a creative project, or any moment when you feel you are at a turning point. For job questions with a specific focus, the career tarot spread is more targeted.

How to read it

  • Read the first three cards as a story. Past influences, present and future form a timeline. Read them in that order, then add cards 4 and 5, which often change how the story feels.
  • Compare card 3 with card 5. Card 3 is where things are heading, card 5 is the best they could become. If both are bright, keep doing what you are doing. If card 3 is hard and card 5 is bright, the gap between them is the work the reading is pointing to.
  • Let card 4 surprise you. You might ask about a job and draw a Cups card in position 4. Then the real question may be about feeling valued rather than about the job itself.
  • Count reversed cards. Three or more reversed cards suggest something blocked or delayed. Ask what is holding you back before pushing forward.
  • Note the layout does not matter. Some books lay the five cards in a cross, others in a row. The meaning comes from the positions, so read them in the order listed above and record them in your journal.

A quick example

Say you ask about a project that has stalled. The Eight of Pentacles as the present shows steady work, the Five of Wands as a past influence shows friction in the team, and the Four of Cups as the future shows interest fading if nothing changes. The Page of Wands as the reason behind the question reveals that you miss the excitement of the early days, and the Ace of Wands as the potential suggests a fresh start or a new angle on the same idea.

Questions

What is a five card tarot spread?

A layout of five cards, each with a set meaning. This one covers the present, past influences, the future, the reason behind your question and the potential.

How do you read a five card tarot spread?

Read the past, present and future cards as a timeline first, then look at the reason behind the question and compare the future card with the potential card.

Is a five card spread better than three cards?

Not better, just deeper. Three cards suit quick questions. Five cards add the motive behind your question and the best possible outcome, which helps with bigger questions.
