Sade Sati Calculator
Sade Sati is the roughly seven and a half years when Saturn moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it, in the sidereal zodiac. Enter your birth details to find your Moon sign and every Sade Sati in your life, with exact dates for each phase.
What Sade Sati is
Sade sati means "seven and a half" in Hindi. Saturn (Shani) takes about 29.5 years to go around the zodiac and spends about two and a half years in each sign. In Vedic astrology, the three signs centered on your natal Moon sign (your rashi) are counted together: the 12th sign from the Moon, the Moon's own sign and the 2nd sign from it. Saturn's passage through them, about 3 x 2.5 = 7.5 years, is Sade Sati. It is traditionally split into three phases of about two and a half years each: rising, peak and setting.
Because Saturn's cycle is about 30 years, most people go through Sade Sati two or three times in a lifetime. It is one of the most widely discussed ideas in Indian astrology and often feared. We present it as what it is: a symbolic period in a tradition, read as a time for patience, effort and maturity, not a prediction of misfortune.
How Sade Sati is calculated, with an example
The calculator finds your sidereal Moon sign with the Lahiri ayanamsa, then follows Saturn's sidereal position from your birth onward and records every date it enters or leaves the three signs.
Example: if your Moon is in sidereal Aquarius, Sade Sati runs while Saturn crosses Capricorn (rising phase), Aquarius (peak) and Pisces (setting). It begins on the day Saturn first enters Capricorn and ends on the day it finally leaves Pisces for Aries.
"First" and "finally" matter, because Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months every year. Near a sign boundary it can enter a sign, back out, and enter again months later. The calculator shows every crossing, so you can see whether a phase started once or in steps.
Dhaiya and other Saturn periods
The tradition also notes Saturn's passage through the 4th and 8th signs from the Moon, each about two and a half years, often called dhaiya or small panoti. The calculator lists these too. The Western counterpart, Saturn's return to its own birth position, is on the Saturn return calculator; it uses the tropical zodiac and a different idea, so its dates do not match Sade Sati.
Common Sade Sati mistakes
- Using your Sun sign or Western Moon sign. Sade Sati is counted from the sidereal Moon sign. Your Western Moon sign is often the next sign along, which would shift every date by about two and a half years.
- Reading general lists of dates. Articles that list Sade Sati dates per Moon sign are correct only if they handle Saturn's retrograde re-entries; the calculator gives yours to the day.
- Assuming hardship. Traditional texts themselves say Saturn's results depend on the whole chart. Nothing about Sade Sati predicts illness, losses, legal trouble or death, and we do not sell or recommend remedies.
