Navamsa Chart Calculator (D9)
The navamsa, or D9, is the ninth divisional chart of Vedic astrology: each sign is cut into nine parts and every graha is moved to the sign its part belongs to. Enter your birth date, time and place to see your navamsa chart beside your kundli, with each planet's D9 sign.
How the navamsa is built
Each 30-degree sign is divided into nine navamsas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. The twelve signs give 108 navamsas in all, which is exactly the number of nakshatra padas (27 x 4), so each pada of a nakshatra is also one navamsa.
The nine parts of each sign are assigned to signs in zodiac order, starting from a fixed point that depends on the sign's element:
- Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): start from Aries
- Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): start from Capricorn
- Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): start from Libra
- Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): start from Cancer
Because 9 navamsas per sign and 12 signs line up neatly, the result is a continuous run: the 108 navamsas go round the zodiac nine times, Aries to Pisces, starting at 0 degrees Aries.
A worked navamsa example
Say your sidereal Sun is at 15 degrees Leo. 15 divided by 3.333 is 4.5, so it is in the 5th navamsa of Leo (13 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes). Leo is a fire sign, so counting starts from Aries: Aries (1), Taurus (2), Gemini (3), Cancer (4), Leo (5). The Sun's navamsa sign is Leo, the same as its sign in the birth chart.
A graha in the same sign in both charts is called vargottama and is traditionally read as strengthened. It happens in one navamsa of every sign: the first for movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), the fifth, the middle one, for fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and the ninth for dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). The calculator flags each vargottama graha.
Why the birth time matters even more here
A navamsa is only 3 degrees 20 minutes wide, and the ascendant crosses one in about 13 minutes on average. So the navamsa lagna can change with a birth time error of a few minutes, while the birth chart lagna would stay the same for two hours. The Moon, moving about half a degree an hour, changes navamsa every six or seven hours. The slower grahas are reliable from a date. If your birth time is rounded to the nearest half hour, treat the D9 lagna as uncertain; the calculator shows how many minutes remain before and after it would change.
What it is used for
In Jyotisha the navamsa is the most consulted of the divisional charts (vargas). It is read as a second look at the strength of each graha, and traditionally as a chart of partnership and of the inner, later-life side of a person. Astrologers read it together with the main chart, the D1 in the kundli calculator, never on its own. We present it as part of a symbolic tradition and make no predictions about marriage or anything else. For the timing system that uses the same Moon position, see the dasha calculator.
Questions
What is a navamsa chart?
The ninth divisional chart (D9) in Vedic astrology. Each sign is divided into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes, and each graha is placed in the sign assigned to its part.
How do I calculate my D9 chart?
Find each graha's sidereal degree, work out which of the nine parts of its sign it is in, and count from Aries, Capricorn, Libra or Cancer depending on whether the sign is fire, earth, air or water. The calculator does this for every graha and the lagna.
What does vargottama mean?
A graha that occupies the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsa. It is traditionally read as strong and consistent.
Why is my navamsa lagna different on another site?
The navamsa lagna changes about every 13 minutes, so a small difference in birth time, time zone or ayanamsa can move it. Check the birth time first.
Is the navamsa chart more important than the birth chart?
Traditionally no. The birth chart (D1) is the main chart and the navamsa refines it. Astrologers read them together.
