漸 Jiàn · Wind over Mountain

Things are moving forward, but slowly and in stages. This hexagram uses the image of a tree growing on a mountain and of a wild goose moving gradually toward higher ground. Hexagram 53 in plain words

Wind, here meaning wood, sits above the mountain. A tree on a mountainside grows slowly but stands firm, becoming a landmark over the years. Tradition compares this to a marriage carried out step by step, with every custom observed, so that the union stands on solid ground. It says that perseverance furthers.

The commentary says the wise person dwells in dignity and goodness to improve the customs of the people. Influence that lasts works gradually, by example, the way a tree changes a hillside. The lines follow a wild goose moving from the shore to a rock, a plateau, a tree, a summit and finally the clouds. Each stage has its own challenges, and some feel exposed or lonely, but the movement is real. Do not try to rush relationships, careers or projects that need time to root. Respect the proper sequence, keep your dignity, and let trust build one stage at a time. What grows slowly is harder to uproot.

The judgment

Kien suggests to us the marriage of a young lady, and the good fortune (attending it). There will be advantage in being firm and correct.

Translation: James Legge, 1882 (public domain).

The image

(The trigram representing) a mountain and above it that for a tree form Kien. The superior man, in accordance with this, attains to and maintains his extraordinary virtue, and makes the manners of the people good.

From Legge's Appendix II (the Great Symbolism), The Sacred Books of the East, vol. 16, 1882 (public domain).

In plain words: A tree grows on a mountain, slowly, yet it can be seen from far away. Build your character step by step and let your quiet example improve the people around you.

The six lines

Read only the lines that changed in your reading. Lines are counted from the bottom.

Line 1 (bottom)

The first SIX, divided, shows the wild geese gradually approaching the shore. A young officer (in similar circumstances) will be in a position of danger, and be spoken against; but there will be no error.

The wild goose moves toward the shore. You are young in this and exposed; people may criticize, but there is no real fault.

Line 2

The second SIX, divided, shows the geese gradually approaching the large rocks, where they eat and drink joyfully and at ease. There will be good fortune.

The goose reaches a big rock and eats and drinks in peace. You have found safe ground; enjoy it and share it with others.

Line 3

The third NINE, undivided, shows them gradually advanced to the dry plains. (It suggests also the idea of) a husband who goes on an expedition from which he does not return, and of a wife who is pregnant, but will not nourish her child. There will be evil. (The case symbolised) might be advantageous in resisting plunderers.

Legge's line uses an old image of pregnancy. It is a picture of your situation, not a prediction about a pregnancy: for that, ask a doctor.

The goose reaches the high plateau, out of its element. Pushing too far from your base leaves things unfinished; guard what you already have.

Line 4

The fourth SIX, divided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the trees. They may light on the flat branches. There will be no error.

The goose reaches a tree and perhaps finds a flat branch to stand on. Adapt and find a temporary safe place, and there is no blame.

Line 5

The fifth NINE, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the high mound. (It suggests the idea of) a wife who for three years does not become pregnant; but in the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune.

Legge's line uses an old image of pregnancy. It is a picture of your situation, not a prediction about a pregnancy: for that, ask a doctor.

The goose reaches the summit. For a long while nothing seems to come of your efforts, but in the end nothing can block you; good fortune.

Line 6 (top)

The sixth NINE, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the large heights (beyond). Their feathers can be used as ornaments. There will be good fortune.

The goose rises to the cloud heights, and its feathers serve as ornaments for a ceremony. Your example inspires others; good fortune.

Opposite (every line changed)54. The Marrying Maiden
Inverse (turned upside down)54. The Marrying Maiden
Nuclear (lines 2 to 5)64. Before Completion

All three relations have traditional Chinese names (cuo gua for the opposite, zong gua for the inverse, hu gua for the nuclear). Many modern readers use the opposite as the shadow side of a situation, the inverse as the same moment seen from the other side, and the nuclear hexagram as its inner core.
