Hexagram 33: Retreat

遯 Dùn · Heaven over Mountain

The tide is running against you for now, and the wise move is a well-timed withdrawal. This is not defeat or running away: it is stepping back while you still can, keeping your dignity and your strength intact. Pull out of fights you cannot win, keep a polite distance from people who drain you, and wait for conditions that suit you better.

Hexagram 33 in plain words

Heaven sits above the mountain. The mountain rises, but the sky keeps its distance and always stays out of reach. That is the picture of retreat: something pushes upward, and the stronger force does not wrestle with it, it simply withdraws to a height where it cannot be pulled down. Tradition links this hexagram to the season when the dark forces are gaining and the light is wise to step back rather than spend itself.

In practice, retreat is an active skill. It means choosing when to leave, how far to go, and what to protect on the way out. You keep your standards and your courtesy, and you do not let yourself be dragged into resentment or open conflict. Small, careful steps still work now, but big pushes do not. Treat this as a strategic pause. Distance gives you room to think, to rest your position, and to return later from a stronger place. The danger is either clinging too long or leaving with bitterness. Go cleanly, go in good time, and keep the door open behind you.

The judgment

Thun indicates successful progress (in its circumstances). To a small extent it will (still) be advantageous to be firm and correct.

Translation: James Legge, 1882 (public domain).

The image

(The trigram representing) the sky and below it that for a mountain form Thun. The superior man, in accordance with this, keeps small men at a distance, not by showing that he hates them, but by his own dignified gravity.

From Legge's Appendix II (the Great Symbolism), The Sacred Books of the East, vol. 16, 1882 (public domain).

In plain words: A mountain rises toward heaven, but heaven draws back out of reach. Keep petty or harmful people at a distance, not with anger, but with calm dignity and clear limits.

The six lines

Read only the lines that changed in your reading. Lines are counted from the bottom.

Line 1 (bottom)

The first SIX, divided, shows a retiring tail. The position is perilous. No movement in any direction should be made.

You are retreating at the very tail of the line, the most exposed spot. Do not start anything new now; stay low and simply get clear.

Line 2

The second SIX, divided, shows its subject holding (his purpose) fast as if by a (thong made from the) hide of a yellow ox, which cannot be broken.

You are bound fast, as if tied with yellow ox hide that no one can loosen. Hold firmly to what you know is right and to the person or duty you have chosen; your steadiness cannot be pulled away.

Line 3

The third NINE, undivided, shows one retiring but bound, to his distress and peril. (If he were to deal with his binders as in) nourishing a servant or concubine, it would be fortunate for him.

Your retreat is held back by ties and obligations, and that brings strain. Use the situation to look after the people who depend on you, but do not attempt anything large.

Line 4

The fourth NINE, undivided, shows its subject retiring notwithstanding his likings. In a superior man this will lead to good fortune; a small man cannot attain to this.

You choose to withdraw willingly and on good terms. For someone with self-command this works well; only a person ruled by their wants would find it a loss.

Line 5

The fifth NINE, undivided, shows its subject retiring in an admirable way. With firm correctness there will be good fortune.

This is a graceful, friendly retreat, made at the right moment and with clear purpose. Stay steady in your decision and it turns out well.

Line 6 (top)

The sixth NINE, undivided, shows its subject retiring in a noble way. It will be advantageous in every respect.

You step back with a light heart, free of doubt and of old attachments. Nothing holds you, and every road is open.

Opposite (every line changed)19. Approach
Inverse (turned upside down)34. Great Power
Nuclear (lines 2 to 5)44. Coming to Meet

All three relations have traditional Chinese names (cuo gua for the opposite, zong gua for the inverse, hu gua for the nuclear). Many modern readers use the opposite as the shadow side of a situation, the inverse as the same moment seen from the other side, and the nuclear hexagram as its inner core.
