Hexagram 1 in plain words

Heaven sits above heaven: six unbroken lines, the only hexagram made entirely of strength. The image is the sky in constant motion, never tired and never idle. Tradition reads it as pure initiative, the power that starts things and gives them shape. Its lines follow a dragon as it rises from the deep, appears in the field, leaps, flies, and finally overreaches, so the hexagram is as much about timing as about power.

In practice this is a time to lead, begin, and commit. Your energy is high and others may look to you. The lesson is to keep that force tied to a clear and honest purpose, and to renew it daily the way the sky renews its course. Strength without timing goes wrong: there are moments to stay hidden and prepare, moments to step forward, and moments to stop before you go too far. Read the changing lines carefully, because they tell you which stage of the dragon you are in. Work hard, stay alert to your own excess, and let consistency do what bursts of effort cannot.

The judgment

Khien (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm.

Translation: James Legge, 1882 (public domain).

The image

Heaven, in its motion, (gives the idea of) strength. The superior man, in accordance with this, nerves himself to ceaseless activity.

From Legge's Appendix II (the Great Symbolism), The Sacred Books of the East, vol. 16, 1882 (public domain).

In plain words: The sky keeps turning without rest, and its strength comes from never stopping. Take that as your model: steady, daily effort carries you further than one great push.

The six lines

Read only the lines that changed in your reading. Lines are counted from the bottom.

Line 1 (bottom)

In the first (or lowest) NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as) the dragon lying hid (in the deep). It is not the time for active doing.

The dragon is still hidden under the water. Your ability is real, but the moment has not come: prepare quietly and do not act yet.

Line 2

In the second NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as) the dragon appearing in the field. It will be advantageous to meet with the great man.

The dragon appears in the field. You are starting to be seen, so it helps to meet people who can guide or support you.

Line 3

In the third NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as) the superior man active and vigilant all the day, and in the evening still careful and apprehensive. (The position is) dangerous, but there will be no mistake.

You work hard all day and stay watchful at night. The position carries some risk, but steady effort and self-checking keep you free of blame.

Line 4

In the fourth NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as the dragon looking) as if he were leaping up, but still in the deep. There will be no mistake.

The dragon may leap up or stay in the deep. You are at a point of choice: test your ground honestly, and either move is acceptable if it is true to you.

Line 5

In the fifth NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as) the dragon on the wing in the sky. It will be advantageous to meet with the great man.

The flying dragon is in the sky. This is your moment of full influence; act with confidence and seek out people of real worth.

Line 6 (top)

In the sixth (or topmost) NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as) the dragon exceeding the proper limits. There will be occasion for repentance.

The dragon has flown too high and will regret it. Pride or overreach is the danger now: pull back before strength turns into excess.

When all six lines change

(The lines of this hexagram are all strong and undivided, as appears from) the use of the number NINE. If the host of dragons (thus) appearing were to divest themselves of their heads, there would be good fortune.

All six lines are changing: a flight of dragons with no single head. Strength works best now when no one dominates, so lead by cooperating and the outcome is favorable.

Opposite (every line changed)2. Receptive Earth
Inverse (turned upside down)1. Creative Force (itself)
Nuclear (lines 2 to 5)1. Creative Force (itself)

All three relations have traditional Chinese names (cuo gua for the opposite, zong gua for the inverse, hu gua for the nuclear). Many modern readers use the opposite as the shadow side of a situation, the inverse as the same moment seen from the other side, and the nuclear hexagram as its inner core.
