Hexagram 8: Holding Together
比 Bǐ · Water over Earth
This is a time for joining together. People are looking for a center to gather around, and the question is where you belong and with whom. This hexagram asks you to commit sincerely to the right group, person, or cause, and not to hesitate too long. Bonds made now in good faith hold; those who arrive late may find the door closed.

Hexagram 8 in plain words
Water sits above earth. Water on the ground flows together and fills every hollow, holding to the earth closely. That is the image of union: people who belong together finding one another. In the hexagram, one strong line in the fifth place stands as the center, and the yielding lines around it gather to it. Tradition says to look within and ask whether you have the steadiness and sincerity to be such a center, or whether you should join one.
In your situation, connection is the theme. It is good to seek allies, build community, or deepen a relationship, but the bond must rest on real loyalty rather than convenience. Choose carefully, because holding together with the wrong people does harm. At the same time, do not wait too long while others form their circles; hesitation can leave you outside. If you are the one others gather around, you carry responsibility: be consistent, fair, and open, and let people come freely rather than pulling them in. Honest commitment is what turns a loose crowd into a true group.
The judgment
Pî indicates that (under the conditions which it supposes) there is good fortune. But let (the principal party intended in it) re-examine himself, (as if) by divination, whether his virtue be great, unintermitting, and firm. If it be so, there will be no error. Those who have not rest will then come to him; and with those who are (too) late in coming it will be ill.
Translation: James Legge, 1882 (public domain).
The image
(The trigram representing) the earth, and over it (that representing) water, form Pî. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, established the various states and maintained an affectionate relation to their princes.
From Legge's Appendix II (the Great Symbolism), The Sacred Books of the East, vol. 16, 1882 (public domain).
In plain words: Water rests on the earth and flows together, filling every hollow. Close ties form when you reach out, keep in touch, and treat the people you depend on with real warmth.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your reading. Lines are counted from the bottom.
Line 1 (bottom)
The first SIX, divided, shows its subject seeking by his sincerity to win the attachment of his object. There will be no error. Let (the breast) be full of sincerity as an earthenware vessel is of its contents, and it will in the end bring other advantages.
Hold to others with full sincerity. Truth that fills you like a full clay bowl draws good fortune, even from unexpected places.
Line 2
In the second SIX, divided, we see the movement towards union and attachment proceeding from the inward (mind). With firm correctness there will be good fortune.
Your loyalty comes from within, not from pressure. Stay true to yourself in the bond and good fortune follows.
Line 3
In the third SIX, divided, we see its subject seeking for union with such as ought not to be associated with.
You are holding together with the wrong people. Notice it and step back before the connection pulls you off course.
Line 4
In the fourth SIX, divided, we see its subject seeking for union with the one beyond himself. With firm correctness there will be good fortune.
You show your loyalty openly to someone worthy. Steady, visible support brings good fortune.
Line 5
The fifth NINE, undivided, affords the most illustrious instance of seeking union and attachment. (We seem to see in it) the king urging his pursuit of the game (only) in three directions, and allowing the escape of all the animals before him, while the people of his towns do not warn one another (to prevent it). There will be good fortune.
Union shown clearly: like a fair ruler on a hunt who lets the animals that run away go free. Draw people in without forcing anyone; those who come do so willingly.
Line 6 (top)
In the topmost SIX, divided, we see one seeking union and attachment without having taken the first step (to such an end). There will be evil.
You find no head to hold to, or you came too late. Without a clear center or commitment, things go badly: decide where you stand.
