Hexagram 16 in plain words

Thunder sits above earth. Thunder bursts out of the ground in early spring, waking everything that slept through the winter. Movement rises out of devotion: the earth below is receptive, and the thunder above stirs it into action. In the hexagram, a single strong line in the fourth place wakes the yielding lines around it, like one person whose drive inspires a whole group. Tradition links this hexagram to music, which moves people's hearts and binds them together.

In your situation, there is a chance to inspire or be inspired. This is a good time to gather support, plan an event, or start something that depends on people's willingness. Success comes when your action fits the natural direction of things, the way thunder fits the season, and when you prepare well beforehand. The risk is getting carried away. Enthusiasm that is only noise, that boasts or depends on others to keep it going, leads to disappointment. Keep your excitement grounded in real purpose, act with timing, and notice early when the mood is turning so you can change course.

The judgment

Yü indicates that, (in the state which it implies), feudal princes may be set up, and the hosts put in motion, with advantage.

Translation: James Legge, 1882 (public domain).

The image

(The trigrams for) the earth and thunder issuing from it with its crashing noise form Yü. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, composed their music and did honour to virtue, presenting it especially and most grandly to God, when they associated with Him (at the service) their highest ancestor and their father.

From Legge's Appendix II (the Great Symbolism), The Sacred Books of the East, vol. 16, 1882 (public domain).

In plain words: Thunder bursts from the earth and the land wakes up. Enthusiasm is strong now; give it a worthy form, the way music and ceremony turn shared feeling into honour for what matters.

The six lines

Read only the lines that changed in your reading. Lines are counted from the bottom.

Line 1 (bottom)

The first SIX, divided, shows its subject proclaiming his pleasure and satisfaction. There will be evil.

You show off your excitement too loudly. Bragging about connections or plans brings misfortune: keep quiet.

Line 2

The second SIX, divided, shows one who is firm as a rock. (He sees a thing) without waiting till it has come to pass; with his firm correctness there will be good fortune.

Firm as a rock, you do not get carried away and you see the signs early. Steadiness brings good fortune.

Line 3

The third SIX, divided, shows one looking up (for favours), while he indulges the feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. If he would understand!: If he be late in doing so, there will indeed be occasion for repentance.

You look upward and wait for others to give you enthusiasm. Hesitation and dependence bring regret: act on your own.

Line 4

The fourth NINE, undivided, shows him from whom the harmony and satisfaction come. Great is the success which he obtains. Let him not allow suspicions to enter his mind, and thus friends will gather around him.

You are the source of the energy, and great things come of it. Do not doubt; friends gather around you like hair held by a clasp.

Line 5

The fifth six, divided, shows one with a chronic complaint, but who lives on without dying.

Legge's line uses an old image of illness. Read it as a picture of your situation, not as advice about anyone's health: for that, ask a doctor.

A lasting strain keeps you from simple enthusiasm, yet it also keeps you from collapse. Steady pressure holds you in place: endure it and stay alert.

Line 6 (top)

The topmost six, divided, shows its subject with darkened mind devoted to the pleasure and satisfaction (of the time); but if he change his course even when (it may be considered as) completed, there will be no error.

You are lost in a false or blind enthusiasm. If you wake up and change course, even now, there is no blame.

Opposite (every line changed)9. Small Taming
Inverse (turned upside down)15. Modesty
Nuclear (lines 2 to 5)39. Obstruction

All three relations have traditional Chinese names (cuo gua for the opposite, zong gua for the inverse, hu gua for the nuclear). Many modern readers use the opposite as the shadow side of a situation, the inverse as the same moment seen from the other side, and the nuclear hexagram as its inner core.
