Midheaven Calculator
Your Midheaven, or MC, is the zodiac degree that was at the highest point of the sky, due south in the Northern Hemisphere, when you were born. Enter your birth date, time and place to find its sign and degree and a reading of what astrologers link it with.
What the Midheaven is
Draw a line across the sky from due north, straight overhead, to due south. That line is your local meridian. The degree of the zodiac crossing it at your birth is the Midheaven (MC, from the Latin medium coeli, middle of the sky). Its opposite point, under your feet, is the Imum Coeli (IC). Together with the Ascendant and Descendant they are the four angles of a chart.
Astrologers read the Midheaven as the most public point of the chart: your reputation, the direction you aim for in work and public life, and the role you want to be known for. It is read as a theme of vocation in the widest sense, not a forecast of a job, a title or an income.
How it is calculated, and a check you can do
The calculator converts your birth time to Universal Time, finds the local sidereal time at your longitude, and converts that point of the celestial equator into the ecliptic degree that shares it. Unlike the Ascendant, the Midheaven does not depend on your latitude, only on your longitude and the exact time.
A rule of thumb: around local solar noon, when the Sun is at its highest, the Sun sits close to the Midheaven, so the MC sign is usually the Sun's sign or the one next to it. Note that local solar noon is not 12:00 on the clock: daylight saving time, your position within the time zone and the time of year can shift it by an hour or more.
Each sign takes between about 1 hour 50 minutes and 2 hours 10 minutes to cross the meridian, wherever you are, because of the tilt of the zodiac against the equator. So a birth time off by half an hour moves the MC by roughly 7 to 8 degrees.
Midheaven and the tenth house
In the Placidus system (our default) and most other quadrant systems, the Midheaven is the cusp of the tenth house. In Equal and Whole Sign houses it is not: the houses are counted from the Ascendant, and the MC floats, usually in the ninth, tenth or eleventh house. That is why some charts show "MC in the 9th house". It is not a mistake, just a different house system. The calculator shows the MC degree in all three systems and which house it falls in.
Common Midheaven mistakes
- Guessing the birth time. The MC moves about a degree every four minutes, so the time needs to be close.
- Reading the MC as a job title. A Capricorn MC does not mean you should be a manager. Astrologers read it as a style and direction: for Capricorn, recognition earned slowly through responsibility.
- Births far north or south. Above about 66 degrees latitude the MC can end up far from the Ascendant in odd ways and Placidus cannot be drawn; we switch to Whole Sign houses and explain it.

Questions
What is my Midheaven sign?
It is the zodiac sign of the degree at the top of your chart, on the meridian, at your birth. Enter your birth date, time and place above to find it.
What does the Midheaven mean in astrology?
It is read as your public direction: reputation, vocation in the wide sense and how you want to be seen in the world. It is a symbolic theme, not a career prediction.
Can I find my Midheaven without a birth time?
No. The Midheaven passes through all twelve signs in a day, about two hours each, so it needs the time.
Is the Midheaven the same as the tenth house?
In Placidus and other quadrant house systems, yes: the MC is the tenth house cusp. In Whole Sign and Equal houses it is a separate point that can fall in the ninth, tenth or eleventh house.
What is the IC in astrology?
The Imum Coeli, the point exactly opposite the Midheaven. It is read as roots, home and private foundations, and is the fourth house cusp in quadrant systems.
