What the card shows

An armored knight on a white horse charges at full gallop, sword raised high, with a red cloak and plume streaming behind him. Clouds are torn across the sky, small trees bend in the wind and birds scatter overhead, while the saddle cloth is decorated with butterflies and birds. The charge is read as speed, ambition and single-minded focus, and the windswept setting as the risk of moving faster than the situation allows.

Knight of Swords upright

The Knight of Swords arrives at full speed. This card is about drive and decisive action: you know what you want and you are going after it now. There is a lot of mental energy here, sharp reasoning, quick decisions and a readiness to argue your case. When a situation has been stuck, this knight is often what gets it moving.

That speed has real value. Upright, the card can point to a burst of progress, a bold move or the courage to say what others will not. It also carries a caution. A horse at full gallop is hard to steer, and the wind on this card bends everything in its path. Make sure you are charging in the right direction, and that the people around you are not knocked aside on the way. Keep your goal in view, but leave a little room for listening. Focused energy works best when it also knows when to slow down for a turn.

Knight of Swords reversed

  • recklessness
  • impatience
  • rushing ahead
  • aggression
  • scattered energy

Reversed, the Knight of Swords can show energy without direction. You may be rushing from one idea to the next, making decisions on impulse or pushing a point so hard that people stop listening. Impatience can lead to careless mistakes.

It can also describe someone around you who is pushy, blunt or quick to pick a fight. If you are on the receiving end, step back and refuse to match their pace. If it is you, take a breath and slow the horse down. A short pause to plan can save you from having to undo a rushed move later.

Knight of Swords in love

Upright: Single, someone may sweep into your life quickly and with a lot of confidence. In a relationship, the card points to direct talk and fast developments, so make sure both of you are keeping pace.

Reversed, hasty words or impatience may cause hurt. Slow down and listen before you react.

Knight of Swords for career and work

Upright: At work, this is a time for decisive action, bold pitches and pushing a project forward. Move quickly, but check the details.

Reversed, rushing or clashing with colleagues may backfire. Plan before you act, and choose your words with care.

Knight of Swords as feelings

They feel strongly about you and may act fast on it, though they can be more focused on their own goals than on your pace.

Knight of Swords as advice

Act with speed and conviction, but check your direction and watch who is in your path.

Upright

As the pastSwift, determined action led here. You or someone close charged ahead with strong opinions and plenty of drive.
As the presentEvents are moving fast. Ambition and focus are pushing you forward, and decisions are being made at speed.
As the future or outcomeMomentum is building. Expect a burst of activity, quick changes and the chance to pursue a goal head-on.
As the obstacleSpeed is the test here. Charging ahead can leave people behind, or cause you to overlook details that matter.
As adviceAct decisively, but look where you are going. Pursue the goal with energy while staying aware of how your words land.

Reversed

As the pastRushing in without a plan shaped what came before. Impatience or sharp words may have caused problems you are still sorting out.
As the presentEnergy is scattered right now. You may be pushing too hard, too fast, or in too many directions at once.
As the future or outcomeThe pace could turn hectic if you keep charging ahead. Slowing down a little tends to prevent mistakes you could easily avoid.
As the obstacleRecklessness is the block. Speaking before thinking, or trampling others to reach a goal, undercuts the very thing you want.
As advicePause before you act. Make a plan, choose one direction and soften your words even when you feel strongly.

What A. E. Waite wrote about Knight of Swords in 1910

Waite designed this deck with Pamela Colman Smith and published its meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910, public domain). His words, as printed:

Divinatory meaning:

Skill, bravery, capacity, defence, address, enmity, wrath, war, destruction, opposition, resistance, ruin. There is therefore a sense in which the card signifies death, but it carries this meaning only in its proximity to other cards of fatality.

Reversed:

Imprudence, incapacity, extravagance.

The modern charging, opinionated knight echoes Waite's skill, bravery and wrath. Waite went further into war, ruin and destruction, noting the card signifies death only beside other cards of fatality, and his reversal is just imprudence, incapacity and extravagance.
