Mercury Sign Calculator
Your Mercury sign is the zodiac sign Mercury was in when you were born. Enter your birth date to find it, with its degree and whether Mercury was retrograde, plus a reading of what astrologers link it with: how you think, learn and talk.
Only three possible signs
Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun, and from Earth it never appears more than about 28 degrees away from it. Since a sign is 30 degrees wide, your Mercury sign can only be your Sun sign or the sign just before or just after it. A Pisces Sun can have Mercury in Aquarius, Pisces or Aries, and nowhere else.
Because Mercury loops back roughly three times a year, it is retrograde on nearly a fifth of all days. So a retrograde Mercury in a birth chart is ordinary, not a rare mark.
How your Mercury sign is calculated
The calculator converts your birth date and time to Universal Time and computes Mercury's geocentric longitude and daily speed in the tropical zodiac. Mercury can move up to about two degrees a day when it is fast, so on the days it changes sign the birth time matters, and the calculator tells you when that is the case. A negative daily speed means Mercury was retrograde at your birth; a speed close to zero means it was stationary, about to turn.
Example: for a birth on 5 April with the Sun at about 15 degrees Aries, Mercury could in principle be anywhere from the middle of Pisces to the middle of Taurus. The calculator finds the actual position for that year, which might be, say, 2 degrees Aries, and labels it Mercury in Aries.
What astrologers read in Mercury
Mercury is the planet of the mind in astrology: how you take in information, how you speak and write, how you make connections, bargain and learn. Its sign is read as the style of thinking. Mercury in a fire sign is often described as quick and decisive, in earth as practical and methodical, in air as curious and talkative, in water as intuitive and impressionable. Traditionally Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo, and is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces.
When Mercury shares the Sun's sign, astrologers often read thinking and identity as closely aligned. When it sits in the next or previous sign, they describe a mind with a slightly different flavor from the core personality. Both are common.
Mercury retrograde at birth
The popular idea of Mercury retrograde as a time of missed emails comes from transits, the sky at a given time. A natal Mercury retrograde is something else: one of your birth placements. Astrologers often read it as a reflective, revisiting way of thinking, someone who rewrites, rechecks and sees what others missed. The current and coming retrograde dates are on the retrograde calendar.
Mercury and related tools
Mercury is read alongside the rest of the chart: see it with its house and aspects in the birth chart calculator. Other single-planet calculators include Venus, Mars and Jupiter. In the tarot's Golden Dawn system Mercury belongs to The Magician, the card of skill and communication.
Questions
What is my Mercury sign?
The zodiac sign Mercury was in when you were born. Enter your birth date above. It is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs beside it.
What does Mercury sign mean in astrology?
It is read as your style of thinking and communicating: how you learn, decide, talk and write. Like every placement, it is a symbolic description, not a measure of intelligence.
Was Mercury retrograde when I was born?
The calculator shows Mercury's speed at your birth; a negative value means it was retrograde. This happens on nearly a fifth of all days, so it is common.
Can my Mercury sign be two signs away from my Sun sign?
No. Mercury never gets more than about 28 degrees from the Sun as seen from Earth, so it can only be in the Sun's sign or an adjacent one. If another result shows otherwise, check the birth date and time zone that were entered.
