Mars Sign Calculator
Your Mars sign is where Mars stood in the zodiac at the moment of your birth. Type in your birth date to get the sign, the exact degree and whether Mars was moving retrograde, then read what astrologers link it with: drive, courage, anger and desire.
Mars can be in any sign
Unlike Mercury and Venus, which always stay near the Sun, Mars orbits outside Earth's orbit and can appear anywhere in the zodiac relative to the Sun. Your Mars sign has no fixed link to your Sun sign, so it cannot be guessed from your birthday.
Mars usually spends six to seven weeks in a sign. About every 26 months it turns retrograde for roughly ten weeks, and in those years it can stay in one sign for five to seven months. That is why some birth years have Mars in the same sign for a long stretch of months, and others race through several signs.
How your Mars sign is calculated, with an example
The calculator turns your birth moment into Universal Time and works out Mars's geocentric ecliptic longitude in the tropical zodiac, with its daily speed. Mars moves less than a degree a day, so your birth date is nearly always enough. If Mars crossed into a new sign on your birth day, the time decides and the calculator says so.
Example: two friends born on the same date three years apart share a Sun sign but, because Mars takes about 687 days to orbit the Sun, they will usually have Mars in different signs. Mars comes back to about the same zodiac degree roughly every two years (a Mars return), so people born about two years apart can share a Mars sign, though a retrograde loop can move that by weeks or months.
What astrologers read in Mars
Mars is the planet of action in astrology: how you go after what you want, how you assert yourself and handle conflict, where you find courage and how your energy runs. In relationship astrology it is read with Venus as the active side of attraction. Mars traditionally rules Aries and Scorpio (Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio), is exalted in Capricorn, is in detriment in Libra and Taurus and in fall in Cancer.
These dignities describe style, not worth. Mars in Libra, in detriment, is often read as someone who fights for fairness and prefers to negotiate before striking. Every Mars sign has its own strengths and its own blind spots, and the reading for yours names both.
A Mars retrograde birth, which happens on roughly one day in eleven, is traditionally read as drive that works inward first: strategic, delayed, then strong.
Common Mars sign mistakes
- Reading Mars as aggression only. In astrology Mars covers stamina, initiative and protectiveness as much as anger.
- Using a Mars sign for health questions. Older texts tie Mars to fevers and injuries; we do not, and nothing here is health advice.
- Checking compatibility by Mars sign alone. The meaningful comparisons are between charts, aspect by aspect, as the synastry chart does.

Questions
What is my Mars sign?
The sign Mars occupied when you were born. Use the calculator above with your birth date; Mars's sign does not follow from your Sun sign, so it has to be calculated.
What does my Mars sign mean?
Astrologers read it as your style of action: how you pursue goals, assert yourself, handle anger and express desire. It is a symbolic portrait, not a prediction.
How long does Mars stay in a sign?
Usually six to seven weeks. In a retrograde year it can stay in one sign for five to seven months.
What does Mars retrograde in the birth chart mean?
Seen from Earth, Mars seemed to travel backwards against the stars at your birth, something that lasts roughly ten weeks about every 26 months. Astrologers often read it as energy that builds inside before it shows.
Do I need my birth time for my Mars sign?
Almost never. Only if Mars changed sign on your birth day, and the calculator tells you when that happened.
