What the card shows

Four wands stand upright with a garland of flowers, fruit and ribbons strung across their tops, forming an open canopy. Behind it, two figures in flowing robes raise bouquets above their heads, and a small crowd gathers near a walled town with a castle tower. The garlanded wands are often read as a gateway or wedding arch, and the waving figures as joy that is shared with others.

Four of Wands upright

The Four of Wands is one of the most cheerful cards in the suit. It marks a point where hard work turns into something you can enjoy: a finished project, a move into a new home, an engagement, a graduation or a family gathering. The garland over the wands looks like a doorway decorated for guests, and that sense of welcome is at the heart of the card.

This card also speaks of stable ground. The four wands are planted firmly, so the joy rests on something solid rather than luck. It invites you to pause and mark your progress with the people who helped you get there. Celebrations are not a distraction from your goals; they build the trust and energy that carry you into the next phase. Let yourself feel proud of what you have built. A dinner, a toast or a simple thank-you note can turn a private win into a shared memory.

Four of Wands reversed

  • tension at home
  • postponed plans
  • feeling unwelcome
  • transition
  • lack of support

Reversed, the Four of Wands suggests that something is off in a place that should feel like home. Plans for a celebration may be delayed, or a gathering may be clouded by family friction or unspoken resentment. You might feel you do not quite belong in a group, team or household.

It can also describe a period of change at home: moving, renovating or adjusting to new people. The structure is shifting, so it feels less secure for a while. Ask what would help you feel welcome again, and say it out loud. Small acts of hospitality can repair more than you expect.

Four of Wands in love

Upright: Single, this card can point to meeting someone at a party, wedding or community event. Together, it is a strong sign of commitment and joy, such as moving in, getting engaged or celebrating a milestone.

Reversed, there may be stress around shared living, family approval or wedding plans. The bond can still be good, but the setting needs attention.

Four of Wands for career and work

Upright: At work, this card points to a successful launch, a team win or a welcoming workplace where you feel at home. Take time to recognize the effort that got you here.

Reversed, a team may lack cohesion or a promised milestone may slip. Focus on rebuilding trust and clarity before pushing for the next goal.

What A. E. Waite wrote about Four of Wands in 1910

Waite designed this deck with Pamela Colman Smith and published its meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910, public domain). His words, as printed:

Divinatory meaning:

They are for once almost on the surface, country life, haven of refuge, a species of domestic harvest-home, repose, concord, harmony, prosperity, peace, and the perfected work of these.

Reversed:

The meaning remains unaltered; it is prosperity, increase, felicity, beauty, embellishment.

This is a close match: Waite's country life, harvest-home, concord and peace fit the modern celebration and happy home. Unusually, he said the reversed meaning stays unaltered as prosperity and beauty, whereas modern readers see tension or a celebration on hold.
