What the card shows

A knight in armor with a yellow tunic patterned with salamanders rides a rearing chestnut horse, his helmet topped with flame-like red plumes. He holds a sprouting wand upright, and three pyramid-shaped mountains rise in the distance across the desert. The rearing horse and fiery plumes are usually read as energy that is thrilling but hard to control.

Knight of Wands upright

The Knight of Wands is all momentum. He does not wait for permission or a perfect plan; he goes. When this card appears, it often points to a burst of courage, a spontaneous trip, a new pursuit or someone who brings excitement into your life. You may feel ready to take risks you would normally avoid.

That boldness can open doors that caution would keep shut. The card encourages you to act on your passions and trust your instincts. Still, knights are known for moving fast, not always for finishing. The horse is rearing, not galloping in a straight line. Make sure your enthusiasm has some direction, or you may scatter energy across too many paths. Channel the fire into one clear goal, and you can cover a great deal of ground quickly. Pack light, tell the people who need to know and enjoy the thrill of moving again.

Knight of Wands reversed

  • recklessness
  • haste
  • frustration
  • scattered energy
  • broken promises

Reversed, the Knight of Wands shows energy turning chaotic. You may act before thinking, start fights or chase thrills that lead nowhere. Plans can collapse because they were rushed, and impatience may strain your relationships.

It can also point to frustration when you want to move but cannot, as if the horse is stuck. Rather than forcing things, take a breath and look at the route. A short pause to plan can save you from a long detour. Passion is still useful. It just needs a steadier hand on the reins.

Knight of Wands in love

Upright: Single, this card can bring an exciting, charming person who sweeps you off your feet. Together, it suggests passion, adventure and spontaneity, though stability may not be the main focus.

Reversed, someone may be all heat and no follow-through, or quick to lose interest. Watch for impulsiveness and inconsistent behavior.

Knight of Wands for career and work

Upright: At work, the Knight favors bold moves, quick decisions and taking the lead on something new. Energy and confidence are your strengths now.

Reversed, rushing may cause mistakes or burnout. Slow down enough to plan, and avoid quitting something purely out of frustration.

Knight of Wands as feelings

This person feels strong attraction and excitement toward you and may want to act on it quickly. Their interest is intense but may not be steady.

As the presentEnergy is charging ahead right now. You or someone close wants to act boldly, travel, start something or chase a passion without delay.
As the future or outcomeAction and adventure are galloping in. A fast-moving change or exciting opportunity tends to arrive, asking you to ride with it.
As the obstacleImpulsiveness is the test here. Rushing in without a plan can leave behind a trail of half-done projects and burned bridges.
As adviceAct with courage, but pick a direction first. Let passion drive you, while keeping one eye on where you actually want to end up.

Reversed

As the pastBehind you are rash choices or plans dropped as fast as they began. Haste may have created problems you are still sorting out.
As the presentThe charge has lost its direction. Frustration, scattered energy or impulsive decisions are making it hard to move forward well.
As the future or outcomeThings may feel stop-and-start for a while. Progress tends to steady once you slow down and choose one clear path.
As the obstacleRecklessness blocks the way. Acting before thinking, or promising more than you can deliver, keeps undoing your progress.
As adviceSlow down and think before you act. Pick one goal, make a realistic plan and keep the promises you have already made.

What A. E. Waite wrote about Knight of Wands in 1910

Waite designed this deck with Pamela Colman Smith and published its meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910, public domain). His words, as printed:

Divinatory meaning:

Departure, absence, flight, emigration. A dark young man, friendly. Change of residence.

Reversed:

Rupture, division, interruption, discord.

Modern readers see bold action and adventure, while Waite was literal about movement: departure, flight, emigration and change of residence, plus a dark young man. His reversal of rupture and interruption is close to the modern sense of plans dropped as fast as they began.
