The positions of this spread

  1. The theme of the month: The main thread running through the month, the mood or lesson that ties the four weeks together.
  2. Week one: What the first week asks of you as the month gets going.
  3. Week two: The energy of the second week, often the point where fresh plans meet their first real test.
  4. Week three: The third week, a good place to notice what has shifted since the month began.
  5. Week four: The fourth week and the close of the month: what you wrap up and what you carry forward.
  6. Advice for the month: One practical piece of advice to keep in mind for the whole month.

When to use a monthly tarot spread

The obvious moment is the first day of a new month, but any fresh start works: your first weeks in a new job, the month after a move, the run-up to a big deadline, or the weeks after a hard ending when you want something to look forward to. Some readers prefer to draw on the new moon instead of the calendar date. Pick one rhythm and stick to it, because comparing one month with the next is half the value of the spread. Draw the cards in a calm moment, before the month fills up, and take a photo of the spread so you can return to each weekly card as its week begins.

How to read the month ahead

  • Start with the theme card and keep it in view. Each weekly card is a variation on it, so ask how week one expresses the theme, then week two, and so on.
  • Read the four week cards as a row. The same suit in two weeks running hints at a pattern that lasts more than a few days. A Major Arcana card marks the week that matters most.
  • A hard card in one week is not a bad week set in stone. If the Five of Pentacles or the Three of Swords lands there, read it as the week that needs extra care, then look at the advice card for how to give it.
  • Keep score in your journal. Write one line per card about what you expect, and one line at the end of each week about what actually happened. After three months you will know how the cards speak to you.
  • Zoom in when you need to. If one week looks busy, draw the weekly tarot spread on the Sunday before it, or a single daily tarot card each morning.

Questions

Is there a free monthly tarot spread?

Yes. This page lets you shuffle the full 78-card deck, pick six cards and read every position for free, with no sign-up.

How many cards are in a monthly tarot spread?

This one uses six: a theme card, four weekly cards and an advice card. Some readers use twelve or more, but six keeps the month easy to hold in mind.

When should I do a monthly tarot reading?

On the first day of the month, on the new moon, or on any day that feels like a fresh start. Doing it at the same point each month makes the readings easy to compare.

Can a monthly spread tell me exactly what will happen?

No. Tarot does not predict fixed events. It gives you themes to watch and questions to ask, and how the month goes still depends on your choices.
