What the card shows
A crowned man sits on a stone seat outside a city, hugging one coin tightly to his chest. A second coin balances on top of his crown and his feet rest firmly on two more. His closed posture is read as protection and control, and the town behind him, which he faces away from, as the wider life he risks shutting out.
Four of Pentacles upright
The Four of Pentacles is about holding on. The man on this card has gathered what he needs and he is not letting any of it go: one coin in his arms, one on his head, one under each foot. In practical terms, this can be a good sign. It often appears when you are saving, protecting your resources or setting firm boundaries around your time and energy. Stability matters, and this card respects that.
The catch is in his posture. He is so busy guarding his coins that he cannot move, open his arms or join the city behind him. The card asks a gentle question: is your caution keeping you safe, or keeping you stuck? Security built on fear can turn into rigidity, possessiveness or a reluctance to share. Upright, the Four encourages you to keep your sensible habits while making room for generosity, change and a little trust.
Four of Pentacles reversed
- letting go
- loosening control
- overspending
- greed
- fear of loss
Reversed, the grip starts to loosen. For some, this is healthy: you may be ready to let go of a habit, a grudge or an old need for control, and you feel lighter for it. You might give more freely or take a reasonable risk.
For others, the reversal shows the pendulum swinging too far. Careful saving turns into impulse spending, or fear of loss leads to grasping behavior. Look honestly at which side you are on, and aim for a middle path between holding tight and letting everything go.
Four of Pentacles in love
Upright, this card can show a partner who is loyal and protective but slow to open up. Singles may be guarding their heart after past hurt, which is understandable but can keep good people at a distance.
Reversed, you or a partner may finally be relaxing old defenses and sharing more. It can also point to jealousy or possessiveness that needs to be talked about.
Four of Pentacles for career and work
Upright, the Four of Pentacles supports careful budgeting, protecting what you have built and keeping steady habits. Watch that caution does not stop you from taking reasonable chances to grow.
Reversed, it warns of loose spending or of holding so tightly to one role that you miss better options. Review where your money and time actually go.
Four of Pentacles as feelings
They care about you but keep their feelings close, and may be afraid of losing control if they open up.
Four of Pentacles as advice
Protect what matters, but loosen your grip enough to let good things in.

Upright
| As the past | Holding on tightly brought you here. Saving and protecting what you had created stability, perhaps at the cost of some flexibility. |
|---|---|
| As the present | You have a firm grip on what is yours. That brings real security, but it may also be keeping you closed to change. |
| As the future or outcome | Caution and stability are where this is leaning. You are likely to protect what you have, which is wise up to a point. |
| As the obstacle | Fear of loss is the block. Gripping too tightly can keep good things, and good people, from coming in. |
| As advice | Protect what matters, but loosen your grip a little. Ask honestly whether your caution is serving you or simply keeping you stuck. |
Reversed
| As the past | A grip loosened in the recent past, for better or worse. You may have let go of control, or swung toward careless spending. |
|---|---|
| As the present | Your relationship with control is shifting. You might be learning to let go, or caution may be turning into grasping. |
| As the future or outcome | Release is in the air. Loosening your grip tends to bring relief, as long as it does not swing all the way into carelessness. |
| As the obstacle | Swinging between extremes is the block. Clutching tight one moment and letting everything go the next keeps you off balance. |
| As advice | Find the middle ground. Let go where fear has been in charge, but keep sensible limits in place where they protect you. |
What A. E. Waite wrote about Four of Pentacles in 1910
Waite designed this deck with Pamela Colman Smith and published its meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910, public domain). His words, as printed:
Divinatory meaning:
The surety of possessions, cleaving to that which one has, gift, legacy, inheritance.Reversed:
Suspense, delay, opposition.Holding on to what you have is the common ground. Waite read it as the surety of possessions plus gift, legacy and inheritance, without the modern worry about a fearful, closed grip, and his reversal is simply suspense, delay and opposition.
