What the card shows

A well-dressed merchant in a red cloak drops coins into the open hands of a kneeling man while holding a pair of balanced scales in his other hand. A second kneeling figure waits beside him, and six pentacles float in the sky above. The scales are read as fairness and measure, and the scene as the flow of resources between those who have more and those who need it.

Six of Pentacles upright

The Six of Pentacles is about the movement of help. One person has enough to share and does so with care, weighing what to give on his scales. Upright, the card can show you on either side of that exchange. You may be in a position to support someone, through time, advice or practical aid, or you may be receiving a hand when you need it most.

The scales matter. Generosity here is thoughtful, not careless. It is about giving what you can without draining yourself, and receiving without feeling small. This card often points to fair deals, kind mentors, pay that reflects your effort or a friend who returns a favor. It also asks you to notice your role in the circle: where you are giving, where you are taking and whether the balance feels right. When help moves freely in both directions, everyone stands a little taller.

Six of Pentacles reversed

  • strings attached
  • imbalance
  • debt of gratitude
  • one-sided giving
  • power games

Reversed, the scales tip. Help may come with conditions, or someone may use generosity to keep control. You might be giving far more than you get back, or feeling that you owe someone more than you can repay.

This card asks you to look at the terms of your exchanges, spoken and unspoken. Set limits on what you give, and be wary of offers that leave you dependent. If you have been receiving, think about how you might rebalance things in your own way. Healthy giving should leave both people feeling respected. If an arrangement makes you feel smaller or trapped, it is worth renegotiating or walking away from it.

Six of Pentacles in love

Upright, this card shows a relationship where both people give and receive care. Singles may find someone generous and attentive, or feel ready to offer more of themselves.

Reversed, one partner may be doing most of the giving, or affection may come with strings. Talk openly about what each of you needs.

Six of Pentacles for career and work

Upright, the Six of Pentacles favors fair pay, mentoring and sharing knowledge. It is a good time to ask for support or to offer it to someone starting out.

Reversed, it warns of unequal arrangements or terms that favor only one side. Read the fine print and be clear about what you agree to.

They want to support you and feel good when they can help, and they hope you feel cared for.

Six of Pentacles as advice

The same card reads differently depending on where it lands. These are the readings our spreads use when Six of Pentacles appears in each position. Try it in a career reading, two paths.

Upright

As the pastGenerosity played a part in getting here. Someone gave or received help freely, and that fair exchange shaped what followed.
As the presentGive and take is at the heart of this. Help is flowing, and you may be the one sharing, the one receiving or both.
As the future or outcomeSupport and fair exchange are likely ahead. Help tends to come when you need it, and chances to share it will appear too.
As the obstacleKeeping score is what can block you. Generosity that quietly counts what it is owed stops being generosity at all.
As adviceShare what you can, and accept help when it is offered. Keep the exchange fair, and let kindness move in both directions.

Reversed

As the pastUneven giving shaped what came before. Help may have come with strings attached, or one side may have done all the giving.
As the presentThe balance is off. Someone may be holding power through what they give, or you may be giving far more than you receive.
As the future or outcomeAn imbalance could deepen if nothing is said. Unspoken debts tend to grow heavier the longer they are left alone.
As the obstacleStrings attached are the block. Help that comes with conditions, or a sense of owing someone, is keeping you from feeling free.
As adviceName the imbalance. Give only what you can give freely, and decline help that comes with conditions you cannot accept.

What A. E. Waite wrote about Six of Pentacles in 1910

Waite designed this deck with Pamela Colman Smith and published its meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910, public domain). His words, as printed:

Divinatory meaning:

Presents, gifts, gratification another account says attention, vigilance now is the accepted time, present prosperity, etc.

Reversed:

Desire, cupidity, envy, jealousy, illusion.

Giving and receiving are shared, with Waite listing presents, gifts and gratification, plus a note that now is the accepted time. The modern focus on fair balance goes beyond his text, though his reversal of desire, envy and illusion hints at the same imbalance.
