What the card shows
A great winged angel leans out of the clouds and blows a golden trumpet hung with a white flag bearing a red cross. Below, men, women and children rise from open coffins floating on water, their arms raised toward the sound, with snowy mountains behind them. The trumpet is read as a wake-up call, the rising figures as people answering it, and their open arms as a willingness to leave the past behind and begin again.
Judgement upright
Judgement is the card of the wake-up call. Something sounds, and you realize you cannot go back to how things were. In a reading, it tends to mark a moment of clarity about your life: what has worked, what has not and what you are truly meant to do next.
Despite its name, this card is less about being judged by others than about seeing yourself honestly and with compassion. The figures rising from their boxes are not afraid. They open their arms toward the trumpet. Upright, Judgement invites you to review the past, take the lessons, forgive yourself and others, and then step forward lighter. It can point to a calling, such as a vocation, a cause or a return to something you once loved. It can also mark a decisive moment when you finally make a choice you have been circling for a long time. Listen for what is calling you, and answer it.
Judgement reversed
- self-criticism
- ignoring the call
- doubt
- regret
- stalled growth
Reversed, Judgement can show the inner critic at full volume. You may be replaying past mistakes, doubting your worth or fearing what others will say, and that keeps you stuck.
It can also point to a call you are choosing not to hear: a change you know you need to make but keep postponing. Be gentle and honest with yourself. Looking back is useful only when it leads to learning, not punishment. Write down one lesson from the past and one step you can take now. Letting go of old regret is often what frees you to answer the call at last.
Judgement in love
Upright: For singles, Judgement suggests a clear sense of what you need in love, perhaps after reflecting on past relationships. In a relationship, it points to renewal, forgiveness and a deeper commitment.
Reversed, it can show old wounds or blame getting in the way, or reluctance to make a needed decision. Honest reflection can help clear the air.
Judgement for career and work
Upright, Judgement favors finding your true calling, making a big career decision or stepping into a role that fits who you have become. Your past experience is preparing you.
Reversed, it can point to second-guessing yourself or ignoring a nudge to change direction. Listen to what keeps coming back to you.
Judgement as feelings
They are reflecting seriously on the relationship and feel called to make a real decision about you.
Judgement as advice
Reflect honestly, forgive the past and answer the call you keep hearing.

Upright
| As the past | A wake-up call sits behind this. A moment of clarity showed you that you could not go back to how things were, and it set a new chapter in motion. |
|---|---|
| As the present | You are being called to rise. You can see clearly what has worked, what has not and what you are truly meant to do next. |
| As the future or outcome | A wake-up call is likely ahead. A decision or realization may lead you into a chapter that feels more truly your own. |
| As the obstacle | Judging yourself too harshly could be the snag. Reviewing the past is useful, but dwelling on old mistakes can stop you from answering the call. |
| As advice | Answer the call you have been hearing. Reflect honestly on the past, forgive what you can and step into the change you know you need to make. |
Reversed
| As the past | Harsh self-criticism, or a call you chose not to answer, has been weighing on you. Replaying old mistakes kept you from moving forward. |
|---|---|
| As the present | The inner critic may be at full volume. Doubt, regret or fear of what others think is keeping you from a change you know you need. |
| As the future or outcome | If nothing shifts, growth may stay stalled. Being gentler with yourself and listening to that inner call can still open a new chapter. |
| As the obstacle | Self-criticism and regret are what stand in your way. Dwelling on past mistakes, or ignoring a clear inner call, keeps the new chapter closed. |
| As advice | Be as kind to yourself as you would be to a friend. Forgive what is done, and take one small step toward the change you keep postponing. |
What A. E. Waite wrote about Judgement in 1910
Waite designed this deck with Pamela Colman Smith and published its meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910, public domain). His words, as printed:
Divinatory meaning:
Change of position, renewal, outcome. Another account specifies total loss though lawsuit.Reversed:
Weakness, pusillanimity, simplicity; also deliberation, decision, sentence.Modern readers treat Judgement as an awakening and a call to a fuller life. Waite's upright list is shorter and more worldly, change of position and renewal, plus one account of total loss through a lawsuit, and his reversal pairs weakness with deliberation and sentence.
