What the card shows

A dancing figure wrapped in a long purple sash floats inside a large oval wreath tied with red ribbons, holding a white wand in each hand. In the four corners, among the clouds, appear the heads of a man, an eagle, a bull and a lion. The wreath is read as a cycle completed, the dance as joy and ease, and the four corner figures as the whole world in balance around her.

The World upright

The World is the final card of the major arcana, and it carries the feeling of arriving. When it appears, it often marks the end of a chapter that has been long and meaningful: a goal reached, a lesson learned, a phase completed. There is satisfaction here and a real sense of wholeness.

Upright, the World invites you to recognize how far you have come. Take time to celebrate before you rush on. The figure in the wreath is dancing, not working, and that matters. This card can also point to travel, wider horizons and connecting with people from different places and backgrounds. In a broader sense, it describes feeling at home in your own life and in the world. Since every ending in tarot opens a new beginning, the World also hints that a new cycle is waiting just past this one. Close this chapter well, gather what you have learned, and step forward with confidence.

The World reversed

  • loose ends
  • unfinished business
  • delays
  • lack of closure
  • shortcuts

Reversed, the World suggests you are close to the finish line but something is holding you back. There may be unfinished tasks, an unresolved feeling or a reluctance to let a chapter end.

Another reading points to shortcuts that leave a result feeling hollow. Look at what still needs doing, and do it properly. Sometimes closure means a conversation, a goodbye or simply admitting that something is done. Once the loose ends are tied, the sense of completion you have been waiting for is likely to arrive, and the next cycle can begin with a clean start.

The World in love

Upright: For singles, the World suggests feeling whole on your own, which often draws the right person close. For couples, it describes fulfillment, a milestone reached or a bond that feels complete and secure.

Reversed, it can show unfinished business with an ex or a relationship that has stalled just short of the next step. Closure may be needed before moving on.

The World for career and work

Upright, the World favors completing a major project, graduating or achieving a long-held goal. It can also point to international work or travel.

Reversed, it can show delays near the finish or a project dragging on. Focus on tying up loose ends before starting something new.

The World as feelings

They feel complete and content with you, as if you fit perfectly into their life.

The World as advice

Finish what you started, celebrate what you have achieved and get ready for the next chapter.

As adviceCelebrate how far you have come. Tie up the last threads, honor what you have achieved and then let yourself look toward what comes next.

Reversed

As the pastBehind you is something left almost finished but not quite. Loose ends or a lack of closure have followed you into the present.

As adviceLook at what still needs doing and do it properly. Tie up the loose ends, say what needs saying and let this chapter end with care.

What A. E. Waite wrote about The World in 1910

Waite designed this deck with Pamela Colman Smith and published its meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910, public domain). His words, as printed:

Divinatory meaning:

Assured success, recompense, voyage, route, emigration, flight, change of place.

Reversed:

Inertia, fixity, stagnation, permanence.

Assured success and recompense match the modern completion reading. Waite was also literal about travel, listing voyage, route, emigration and change of place, and his reversal of inertia, fixity and stagnation fits today's sense of something not quite finished.
